SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,005, dated June 20, 1893.

To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JAMES H. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing in thecity and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Fans, .for use in connection with apparatus for burning oil or other hydrocarbon fuels in the furnaces of steamboilers; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention is supplementary to and an improvement on that described in Letters Patent of the United States heretofore granted to me on January 6, 1891, No. 444,115, for 'improvements in injector oil burners for furnaces, and it relates more particularly to the construction of a fan mechanism and steamactuated wheel arrangement for use in connection with an apparatus which employs petroleum, oil, or other hydrocarbon fuel in the furnaces of steam boilers and operates to inject and diffuse the same with a controllable amount of air which is forced in by the fan for the purpose `of securing more perfect and effective combustion.
The invention therefore consists essentially in the construction, arrangement and combination of the several parts, substantially as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved apparatus showing the injecting devices in section and the fan mechanism in elevation. Fig. 2 is a transverse' section on the line fr -y of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view of a fan and its cover plate on the induction side. Fig. 4 is a side view of the steam jet wheel for driving the fan.
Similar figures of reference designate corresponding parts throughout all the different figures of the drawings.
1 denotes the main shell provided at one end with a iiange 2, to which is attached a second iange 3, as shown in the sectional view of Fig. 1. A similar ange may be.attached to the front end of the main shell 1, for connecting it to a steam boiler, furnace, wall or other suitable support of any kind. Through the iange 3 isscrewed the second or oil tube 4 which projects to receive a socket piece 5, into which is screwed the oil supply pipe 14. The socket piece 5 has fitted in its end a plug or ring 6 and through this again is screwed the inner or steam pipe 7. On the end of pipe 7, is another socket piece 8, which receives the steam supply pipe 9 and at its outer end is inserted a plug or nut 10, through which passes the screw rod 11 attached to the conical valve 12. By means of this rod 11 and the hand wheel 13, the valve 12 is adj usted toward or away from its seat in the end of the pipe 4 so as to more or less spray the steam and oil as they mingle with the air in pipe 1 and escape into the furnace.
Air is supplied by the fan 15 which is fastened on tcp of the main shell l, by means of clamp screw bolts19 or it may be attached by flanges or nozzle if desired, or in any other convenient manner. The fan 15 has vanes 20 riveted thereon, as shown in Fig. 3 and it also has an open inlet at 16 where the air enters and a discharge vent at 17 where the air is forced down into the'annular sides around the pipe 4 and out at the end, mingling with the steam and oil escaping past the valve 12. To drive this fan 15 there is provided a small jet steam wheel 21, with curved vanes 23 and steam jets 22, impinging on the vanes 23, as shown in Fig. 2 and also in detail in Fig. 4. The cover 27 of this wheel 21 is made to receive the steam inlet pipe 24 and is provided with an annular steam chamber 25 and an exhaust pipe 26, where the steam escapes after acting on the wheel 21.
28 denotes an axis or spindle on which is fastened the steam driving wheel 21. The spindle 28 has a bearing in the cover plate 27, also one in the center-at 30 and another one 31 at the fan inlet 16. A lubricating cup 32 is applied to the bearing 30 so that it maybe oiled from the outside. The steam propelling wheel 21 maybe larger or smaller than shown and may be driven by any number of jets as the force and volume of the air iiame to be produced, may require. This wheel may also be made to act positively by steam pressure in any of the well known forms of rotary steam engines. The method shown is the most simple and less liable to wear and derangement as in the case of operating by direct or maintained pressure.

being turned on through the pipe 24, the :fan 15 will be set in motion and "the air driven through the annular chamber-18. The steam is then turned on through the pipe 9, produc- 5 ing an induced current at the nozzle 33 for drawing oil in at the holes 35 from the -annular chamber 34, as shown `in Fig. 1. `The `sup ply of oil is then turned on and it enters by the pipe 14 which is connected with a suitable supply tank. The steam and oil supply pipes are provided with a cock for Aregulating the amount Afed to the apparatus;\` T -hegoil and steam thus mingled, pass into the outer "extension of the pipe 7 and escape around the conical valve 12 which is adj usted b y the hand wheel 13'to spraythe oil and steam sothey will mingle `uniformly with the supply of air, driven through the chamber 18. :Thusinjected into alboiler furnace, combustion and heat` aregby the `force of air andsteam currents diffused through thecombustion chamber anddo not impinge on one point as in the case where there is only an induced or natural Kdraft of air.
