.To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EUGENE H. CARR, of Edwardsville, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Copy-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to a manuscript copyholder, for the use ofcopyists and others, and more especially for the use of typewriter operators; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.

Figure I is a front elevation of my improved copy-holder with asheet of paper shown thereon,to.illustrate the use of the invention. Fig. II is a detail, end elevation of one end of the supporting base, and illustrating the one of the buttons that is provided with a frictional bearing.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the supporting legs of the base connected by a cross-bar 2. Secured in the top of the supporting legs 1 are the ends 3 of a wire frame 4. The sides of this Wire frame are connected by cross bars 5, secured in any suitable manner to the frame.

The parts I have thus far described may be of the construction mentioned, or variations from such mentioned construction may be made, as such construction is immaterial to the working of my improved copy-holder.

Extending through and working in the upper ends of the legs 1 is a rod 6, having on its ends buttons 7 formed with a turn-button 8.

9 are extension brackets secured to the top of the frame 4, and in whose outer ends are secured depending eyes 10. One end of a cord 11 is secured to the buttons 7, there beinga separate cord for each side of the holder,

The copy, which is illustrated in the drawings by the sheet 15, is supported by means of spring clasps 16, which may be connected in any suitable manner to the top cross-bar of the copy-holder.

Itis frequently found necessary, in copyholders, when the copy has been placed in position, to change the position of the indieating bar, or the position in which the paper hangs, in order to have the line indicated by the bar the line of the writing or printing on the copy; or, at times, it is found desirable to have the line indicated at an angle on the paper, and for the purpose of changing the indicating bar to any angle across the paper, I form one of the buttons 7 with a friction bearing 17, (see Fig. II,) which bearing may be of any suitable material, such for instance, as felt, that will produce friction between the rod 6 and the buttons. It will be seen that one of the buttons being tight upon the rod 6, and the other movable, when it is desired to change the angle of the indicating bar 13, the loose button may be held by the fingers, while the tight one is turned,and the cord is wound round the tight button, and not wound at the opposite side of the button, at which the loose roller is located, causing one end of the indicating bar to fall while the other remains stationary. I/Vhen the copy has been placed in position, by suspending it from the spring-clasps, the rod 6, with its buttons is turned by means of the buttons 8, to bring the indicating bar to the line desired to begin at, and as line after line is written, the buttons being turned, the cord 11 is unwound from the buttons, and the indicating bar allowed to descend. When the bottom of the sheet is reached, the cord is again wound, raising the indicating bar and the same process is again gone through.

I claim as my invention- 1. In a copy-holder, the combination with a stand and frame, of a rod, buttons on the said rod, cords each secured at one end on said buttons, supports on the frame for said cords, and an indicating bar secured to the free ends of said cords, substantially as set forth.

2. In a copy-holder, the combination with a stand and frame, of a rod, buttons on said rod, cords each secured at one end of said buttons to said rollers, extensions on said frame, eyes 10, on said extensions and an indicating bar secured to said cords; substantially as set forth.

3. In a copy-holder, the combination of a supporting frame, a' rod mounted in said 4 frame, buttons on said rod; one of said buttons being rigidly secured to said rod, and the other button having a frictional bushing bearing, cords secured to said bnttons,i.the free 1:

ends of said cords being supported from the frame, and carrying an indicating bar; substantially as set forth.
