SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,948, dated June 20, 1893.

Kingston, in the county of Luzerii'e and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new 1 and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers;
and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to steam boilers, and has for its object to produce a boiler in which the steam will be quickly generated with a small consumption of fuel, and will be dried in the furnace before being distributed, and to generallyimprove the construction of such a boiler so that it will be simple in-construction and efiicient in use; and .to the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the construction and in the combination of parts hereinafter particularly described and then specifically defined in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical section through the boiler, on the line 1.l of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings the letter A designates the walls of the furnace constructed preferably of brick or masonry and provided with the door B for feeding fuel to the fire grate O and with the door D opening into the ash pit E. The furnace is provided preferably with a metallic top F and is formed above the space over the fire grate with a chamber G for a purpose hereinafter described, which chamber is provided with the metallic top or cover H. The furnace is also provided with a bridge wall I which separates the fire chamber from the space or chamber J through which the products of combustion pass on their way to the escape or draft flue K, and
I this chamber J is provided with a metallic bridge wall so as the better to concentrate the heat of the escaping products of combustion around the lower portion or legs of the water tube. Within the furnace are arranged a number of tubes M, the same being built up or nested to the number desired and arranged with the desired number side by side, there being illustrated in the drawings five tubes in each row, and five rows one above the other. It is preferred to arrange the several rows so that the tubesof one row will lie over the spaces between the row next below so as to bring the heat and products'of combustion into contact with the tubes of each row by causing the circulation to pursue a circuitous course, thereby utilizing the greatest amount of heat before the products escape from the furnace.
The tubes are arranged so as to incline upwardly from their lower ends, and their upper portions are projected at an angle to their length so as to rise uprightly or vertically as shown at N, the upright portions N above the water line receiving the steam generated from the water in the tubes and lying within the chamber G so that the heat from the furnace which rises into the chamber G and by it conplate or partition L just below the top of the fined around the portions of the tubes containing the steam will dry the steam in such portions of the tubes before it is allowed to pass to the distributing pipes. Thetubes M are also arranged so that their lower ends will lie intermediate of the fire chamber and the exitor draft flue K so that the products of combustion will pass from the fire chamber to the lower ends of the tubes and around the same in passing to the draft flue K. By this arrangement 1 cause a direct draft from the fire chamber to the draft fiue and around the lower ends of the tubes so that the strongest or most intense heat is applied where it will do the most effective work, that is, ator near the point wherethe water first enters the tubes. In order to more effectively concentrate the products of combustion around this end of the tube, I form a wall 0 over the top row of tubes adjacent to the chamber J as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings so that the products of combustion in escaping are concentrated around and about the tubes at their lower ends and in the direct line of passage from the fire chamber to the exit or draft flue.

The combination with the furnace, of the tier of inclined Water tubes having their upper portions extended at an angle to the inclined portions, the Ts P coupledtogether at opposite ends of each row of the tier of tubes and having the tubes communicating therewith, and the Ts R and V at the opposite IO ends of the tubes to one side thereof respect ively coupled together and having the Ts P at the ends of the tubes communicating therewith, substantially as and for the purposes described.
