- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC MAX SPUHR, OF DRESDEN, GERMANY.
B O O T T R E E SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,761, dated June 20, 1893.
Application filed September 28, 1892. Serial No. 447,166- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MAX SPUHR, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Dresden, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for \Videning and Smoothing Boots and Shoes, which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of the device taken on line 'yy of Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a side View showing the iron last in section. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line az-x of Fig.1.. Fig. 4. is a front View of the pressure plate and Fig. 5 is a central vertical section through the guide horn.
The apparatus consists essentially of the base plate a, for sustaining the device, upon which is mounted the last section m, the other section Z, being movable sidewise. In the rigidhalf or section'm, is arranged a vertical rod 1), having eccentric ears 0, and having also a lever e pivoted in bearings d. When the lever e is placed -in a horizontal position the eccentric ears 0 are pressed against the movable last section Z, and press the same in the direction of the arrow, shown in Figs. 1 and 3. After the movable last section has been separated to the desired distance, it is locked by pressing down the lever in doing which the projection f, of the lever drops into the notch as shown in Fig. 3. The arm h, carried by the movable section passes through the passageway 2', and is pro vided with a coiled spring 70, which upon releasing the lever e presses back the movable portion of the last. The descent of the pressure platen is attained by means of the rod 0, which extends from said pressure plate to the lever p with which it is connected by means of the rack formed upon the end of the rod and the teeth formed on the inner end of the lever so that the movement of the lever in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 2 tends to draw the plate 7 downward. By this means the shoe is stretched at the instep in the desired manner.
In Fig. 5 is shown a work horn S in vertical section. This is adapted to be mounted on the projection tot the base plate a, and on this may be placed the model to assist the workman in the quick and accurate performance of his work.
I claim 1. In combination, the base having a vertical last section rigidly mounted thereon, a movable last section supported parallel to said rigid section and mounted upon a sliding support normally under spring tension; and an eccentric journaled in the rigid part for separating the sections, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the base and rigid last section, the movable section mounted upon said base, the rod b journaled in the rigid section provided with eccentricscbearing against the movable section, and a lever e for rotating the rod, substantially as described.
3. In combination with the base and rigid last section, the movable last section with means for operating the same, the vertically movable rod 0, carrying the pressure plate on the upper end thereof, and an operatinglever mounted upon the base and connected to said rod for operating the pressure plate, substantially as described. 4 I
4. In combination the base, the rigid last section, the movable last section having sliding connection with the base, the rod 5 journaled in the rigid section and having eccen tries bearing against the movable section, a series of notches f carried by the base, and an operating lever pivoted to the'rod b and having a projection f engaging the notches, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
' MAX SPUHR.
