ELEGTRIG IGNITING DEVICE.
No. 499,596. Patented June 13, 1898.
ATTORN EYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. RUSSELL AND GEORGE E. RUSSELL, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW
' JERSEY.
ELECTRIC lGNlTlNG DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,596, dated June 13, 1893.
Application filed March 9, 1893.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. RUSSELL and GEORGE E. RUSSELL, both citizens of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Electric Igniting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in electric igniting devices and the invention consists in certain novel features pointed out in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the annexed drawings in which Figure 1, shows a side elevation of the lighter extinguished. Fig. 2, is a view similar to Fig. 1 the device being ignited. Fig. 3, is a rear elevation of Fig. 2.
In the drawings the letter A indicates a burner. In the example shown in the drawings the burner has a wick fed from a suitable reservoir or fount B butof course any other suitable burner, as, for example, a gas burner mounted on a gas supply pipe, can be employed. The burner has an electrical contact terminal 0 and when another terminal D is moved from the position in Fig. 1 to the position in Fig. 2 the terminal D comes into contact with the terminal 0 and passes the same with a wiping or sliding action and on the break or separation of the terminals a spark is produced igniting the combustible from burner A. The conductors E F connect the terminals 0 D with a suitable battery (not shown). The conductor E is connected to any suitable point as for example a lever G H fulcrumed at I so that the current can pass along conductor E lever G H fulcrum I and along the fount or pipe 13 to the terminal 0. The lever G H is held in the position shown in Fig. 1 by a spring K and when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1 the contact between the terminals 0 D is broken and the current is prevented from flowing by the insulating post or support L carrying the terminal D and extending from the lever arm G. The lever arm G carries an extinguisher M such as a cap or plate which when the partsoare in the position shown in Serial No. 465,296. (No model.)
Fig.1 will extinguish the flame from burner A. WVhen the lever is moved to the position shown in Fig. 2 the extinguisher is withdrawn from burner A.
If the burner A is a gas burner the extinguisher must snugly close the burner to pre- Vent escape of gas when the burner is not in use but said extinguisher in the case of gas may be made in form of a well known valve actuated by the lever in any way common to the trade. The burner may be supported by a handle N which can be readily grasped when in use or allowed to hang from the suitably supported conductors E F when not in use or the burner might be supported in fixed position on any suitable stand or pedestal which if desired might contain the battery for the conductors E F. The pedestal may be made portable or can be fixed in position as desired.
The lever arm H is shown provided with a cutter or blade 0 which when the lever is actuated moves past an insertion opening or openings P in a plate Q so that a cigar tip can be cut off. By having two platesQ as in Fig. 3 between which the blade 0 is placed said blade is sheathed or incased so that it can do no injury and by providing each plate Q with corresponding openings P the cigar tip can be inserted at either side. Sometimes it is desired to keep the flame from burnerA 8o alive in which case the lever G H can beheld back by-a catch or hook R pivoted at S and having a handle T. In Fig. 2 the catch or look R is shown in dotted lines in its engaging position holding back the lever G H.
When the flame from burner A is ignited it can be used to light a cigar, or other flame or light or by holding back the lever GH the light from burner A can itself be used for illumination as a lamp.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article, a combined cigar cutter and lighting device consisting of a burner, of electrical contact terminals placed in prox- 5 imity to the burner, a lever to one arm of which one of said terminals is secured, an extinguisher actuated by the lever so as to clear the burner when the lighting contact our hands-in the presence of two subscribing is made and to extinguish the flame when the witnesses.
lever is returned,a cutter secured at the other WILLIAM H RUSSELL arm of the lever and a plate having an in- GEO E RUS'SELL 5 sertion opening past which said cutter moves as the lever is actuated, substantially as de- Witnesses:
scribed. WM. 0. H UFF,
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set E. F. KASTENHUBER.
