SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,546, dated June 13, 1893. Application filed January 9, 1893. Serial No. 457,791. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ARTHUR A. HILL, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Composing-Stick, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

' The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved compositors stick, which is simple and durable in construction and arranged for conveniently supporting it from the compositors body to enable the compositor to utilize both hands in setting up the type.

The invention consists of a yieldingly mounted plate fitted to slide in the stick proper and adapted to hold the type in place.

The invention further consists of an arm held in a belt adapted to be secured to the compositors body, the said arm being arranged to carry the stick proper.

The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a reduced side elevation of the same; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same on the line 44 of Fig. 2.

The improved device is provided with a compositors stick proper A, connected by a set screw B with the angular end 0 of an arm 0 adapted to engage a pocket or socket D formed or secured on a belt D adapted to be strapped around the compositors body, over the breast part, as illustrated in Fig. l. The arm 0 can be raised or lowered in the socket D and secured in position therein by a suitable set screw E. The end 0 is inclined upward and forward so as to hold the stick proper A in an angular position for the convenient insertion of the type.

The stick A is provided with the usual bottom plate A and the back F, from the upper end of which extends the top plate G opposite to which is arranged the arm H of the T-shaped plate H, held adj ustably on the back F by a set screw I, so as to regulate the distance between the plate G and arm H according to the width of the column of type set up.

On the end of the plate J are formed lugs J and J engaged by the ends of a spring K, preferably made in the shape of a band and strapped over part of the back F, so that the plate J is yieldingly mounted between the plate G and arm H, it being understood that the lugs J and J are fitted to slide in transversely extending grooves G and H formed in the and arm H.

In order to facilitate the insertion of the type in the stick, I formthe spacing lead L, at its upper end, with an angular projection L, inclined in an opposite direction to that of the yieldingly mounted plate J.

It will be seen that the yieldingly mounted plate J securely holds the type in place, and whenever a single type has been inserted in the stick the said plate will readily permit of inserting the balance of the type for that particular line. It will further be seen that when the stick proper A is held on the arm C and and the latter is attached to the belt D worn by a compositor, then the latter has both hands free for picking up type and inserting the same conveniently in the stick proper A next to the yieldingly mounted plate J which holds the type in place during the time the operator uses his hands to pick up new type.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a compositors stick, of a yielding plate mounted between and at right angles to the fixed and adjustable ends thereof and adapted to yield toward the open side of the stick as the type are inserted, substantially as described.

2. A compositors stick provided with an said plate G arm depending from its rear end and held in a belt adapted to be secured to the compositors body, the said arm being arranged to carry the stick, substantially as shown and described.

3. A compositors stick comprising a stick proper, an arm having an angular extension secured to the stick proper, and a belt formed with a socket to receive the said arm, sub stantially as shown and described.

4. A compositors stick comprising a stick proper, an arm having an angular extension secured to the stick proper, abelt formed with a socket to receive the said arm, and means, substantially as shown and described, for securing the said arm in the said socket, as set forth.

5. A compositors stick provided with a yieldingly mounted plate fitted to slide in the stick and formed with an outwardly flared upper edge to facilitate the insertion of the type, substantially as shown and described.

6. A compositors stick comprising a plate having projecting lugs at its ends and mounted to slide in the transverse arms of the stick 35 8. A compositors stick provided'with a yieldingly mounted plate formed with an outwardly flared upper edge and adapted to engage one side of the type, and a spacing lead engaging the opposite side of the type, and provided with an angular extension or flare along its upper edge and arranged in the op posite direction to that of the yieldingly mounted plate, substantially as shown and described.
