UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK VALIN, OF FAIRFIELD, MAINE.
WINDOW-SASH.
- SPECIFICATION forming Apart of Letters Patent No. 499,405, dated .Tune 13, 1893.
Application filed January 10, 1893. Serial No. 45 7,965. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/cern.:
Be it known that I, FRANK VALIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairfield, in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Window-Sashes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others -skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a window capable ot being partially opened for the purposes of ventilation without raising the sash, and it is particularly adapted to outside or double windows which are usually fastened in cold weather to the outside of the window casing' in such a way that they cannot be opened. When these windows are designed to admit air, they are made with one of the lights of glass hinged so that it can be swung open v by means of a tapering plug fitting a tapering recess formed in the under side of the rail and on the inner or larger end of the plug is a ange or oiset. The inclination which is thus given to all the surfaces by which water or snow can enter eEectually prevents their passage through the window.
I illustrate my invention by means of the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1. isa front View of the lower portion of awindow fitted with my improvement.
Fig. 2. is a top view of the plug, and Fig. 3. is
a section on the line as a: of Fig. l.
A is the sash of the window and A is the lower rail. In the lower edge of the rail A I form a recess which exactly lits the tapering plug a. This plug is preferably cut surfaces of all the openings through which the rain or snow can come are inclined lso that they are thereby readily excluded while the offset a makes an additional protection in this respect.
The plug can be readily taken out and put back in place and it is easily and cheaply made.
l. The herein described ventilated window havinga tapering recess formed in the under side of the lower sash rail and a taperingplug fitting said recess, substantially as descrlbed.
2. The herein described ventilated window having a recess formed in the under sidel of the lower sash rail and a tapering plug fitting said recess the inner or larger end of said plug havinga flange or oiset, substantially as described. y
In testimony whereof I attix my signature 1n presence of two witnesses.
FRANK vALIN.
