on the gas and simultaneously causing an electric spark to ignite it, to be operated by hand and to that particular variety of such apparatus in which an oscillating gas-cock is used instead of a rotatirig gas-cock.
My invention consists in the devices by which the motion is communicated to both the gas-cock and to a movable electrode, in order to both turn on the gas and to make and break an electric circuit at the burner tip, causing a spark to ignite'it. These devices consist of a vibrating arm pivoted rigidly to the gas-cock; and also having a double cam piece or toothed segment; and of a lever arm flexibly attached at one end to a bracket pivoted to the burner and carrying a depending pawl fitted to gear with the cam piece or toothed segment on the vibrating arm; and having springs properly constructed and arranged to properly adjust these devices." A cord for communicating motion depends from the other end of the lever arm and a spring for holding the vibrating electrode in position is provided.
My invention will be more clearly understood by reference to the drawings-in which- Figure 1 is a front view. Fig. 2 is apartial front view enlarged to more clearly show the parts, showing the lever-arm depressed to open the cock by strain of the hand. Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2, showing the lever depressed to close the cock by strain of the hand. Fig. 4 is a detail showing the attachment of the spring by which the lever-arm is returned to position.
To more specifically describe my devices The motion of the vibrating electrode arm 0, is limited by the points 9 and 10, and the stop 11. The springs combined with the lever-arm D attached to the pillar A, at e, are the springs H attached to the pin 6 in the rear of the bracket E and thence bending over the pin 5 on the rear of the actuating lever D, in such way as to hold said lever at a sufficient angle to lift the pawl f, above the double segment or cam 7, 8; and the normal angle of said actuating lever D, is determined by the stop pin 2 on the front of the bracket, E, against which an extension or lip, cl, of the actuating lever, D, comes in contact, just below the adj ustihg screw, 1, by which the lever and bracket are pivoted together. Asmall leaf-spring, G, runs from the pin, 3, upon the face of the actuating lever, D, and plays over the rear of the pawl piece, f, holding said pawl, f, normally vertical. Said pawl is loosely pivoted at, 4, and tapers to an apex which at every alternate movement of the lever-arm, D, gears with the double segment 7, 8, so as to move the electrode arm either to the right or to the left,
and the leaf spring, G, returns said pawl to a vertical position whenever the lever-arm is returned to its normal position.
The operation of myinvention will be readily understood. A pull upon the chain, K, attached to the lever, D, will'cause the pawl, f, to be drawn down and gear with the segment or cam piece 7, and the vibrating electrode, 0, to make and break contact with the fixed electrode, G. By these means the gas-cock, B, will be oscillated so as to be opened, and as the fixed and movable electrodes separate, a spark will be made by which the issuing gas will be lighted. When the pull upon the chain is released, the spring, G, will elevate the leverarm, D, and the spring, H, will restore the pawl f, to a vertical position. The spring, L, which presses against the enlarged part of the electrode arm will steady the vibrating electrode so that it will not be so likely to be jarred out of its position. When now it is desired to turn off the gas, a pull upon the chain, K, depressing the actuating lever, D, will cause the pawl, f, to gear with the second tooth, 8, of the segment, and thereby to oscillate the lower part of the vibrating arm to which the gas-cock and electrode arm are attached and so to close the gas-cock, and of course to carry the movable electrode back again past the tip of the burner, which being accomplished and the cord being released, the pawl, f, will be left in a position so that the first operation for lighting the gas may be repeated. Thusby these alternate pulls upon the chain the gas-cock will be alternately opened and closedthe spark attending the return of the electrodein the latter case serving no purpose. If it be desired to avoid this second spark, it may easily be done by combining with the vibrating electrode some device by which at the return the electrode may be vibrated out of connection with the fixed electrode as, for instance, by the device for that purpose shown in Letters Patent No. 400,47 9 to J. Y. Parke.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In an electric hand lighting gas-burner the combination with the gas-pillar and fixed electrode, of a gas-cock and vibrating electrode carrying arm thereto attached, provided with a cam-piece, or double segment, a pivoted actuating lever-arm, and pawl connected therewith adapted to gear with said double cam-piece, and spring-devices for retaining the pawl normally vertical, and lever arm and pawl normally out of contact with the campiece substantially as described.
2. In an electric hand lighting gas-burner an electrode carrying arm combined with an oscillating gas-cock having near its base acampiece, or segment and a pawl for oscillating said gas-cock and electrode, substantially as described.
3. As an actuating device for electric hand lighting gas -burners wherein the movable electrode is connected with an oscillating gascock, and provided with cams to gear with a pawl a bracket attached to the burner-pillar, a levei arm pivoted to the bracket, a pawl loosely pivoted to the lever-arm, and spring devices properly arranged to hold said pawl normally out of contact with the cams of the electrode-carrying arm, substantially as de scribed.
4:. The combination in an electric hand lighting gas-burner, of the pillar A, fixed electrode Y, gas-cock B, lever arm 0, having campieces 7, 8, rigidly attached to said cock, bracket E, aftixed to pillar A, at e, lever-arm D, loosely pivoted to the bracket, having lip d, pawl f, springs G and H, properly attached and stop 2, all so combined and arranged that depressions of lever-arm D, shall alternately turn on and off the gas, and also produce a spark by make and break of said electrode; substantially as described.
