UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. BYERS, OF RAVENNA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE JOHN F. BYERS MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
FRICTION-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 499,207, dated June 13, 1893. Application filed July 1, 1891- Serial No. 398,178. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN F. BYERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ravenna,
in the county of Portage and State of Ohio,
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Friction-Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
In the drawingshereto annexed and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents an elevation of the brake; and Fig. 2 a vertical cross section of the same.
The brake is shown as applied to a rotary wheel I) supported on shaft b in frame f. A series of loose blocks (preferably of wood) insorted between two guide bars 0 project inwardly in contact with the bottom of the annular groove 0, in the periphery of wheel'b. Bars 0 c are substantially concentric with wheel I) and at a sufficient distance from it to prevent blocks a from binding or pressing on the wheel when the brake is not applied. Bars 0 c are pivoted at one end to screwthreaded rod (1 connected to frame f by nut 01. The other ends of bars 0 c are pivoted to link h, connecting them with lever Z pivoted to frame f. Oapsi are each attached to a block a and their ends extend down at the sides of bars 0 to retain the latter in their relative positions. Gross-bars s s are attached to bars a c by screw bolt 8' and form an adjustable stop 0 or retainer for the series of blocks a.
The brake is applied by forcing down lever 1, thereby pressing blocks a against the periphery of wheel b. Whenever any of blocks a become too much worn they may be taken 3 5 out and the order in the series changed in replacing them or new blocks may be put in place of the worn ones. The position of the whole series of blocks may also be changed 7 by means'of stop 8 s s or nut n. The outer 0 ends of blocks a are recessed on each side to receive bars a 0. Instead of two bars 0, a single bar slotted to receive blocks a may be used; and link it and rod d may be dispensed with, and the bars extended to, and directly 45 connected with the lever, and attached at the other end to the frame. I claim as my invention The combination of frame f, wheel 1), blocks 0,, bars 0, rod (1, link h, lever Z, and caps 2', 50 substantially as described.
