To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, LAMARTINE C. TRENT, of Salt Lake City, Utah Territory, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stone-Cutters, of which the follow-ing is a speciication.

The object of my invention is to make a simple, economical and etlicient stone cutter for use in scabbling, dressingorgadding stone in quarries; and the invention consists in the features and combinations hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved stone cutter as intended for ordinary use; and Fig. 2 a View of a counterbalance for supporting the cutter.

A is a jib crane supporting my improved stone cutter; B a traveler or trolley thereon; C falls suspended from the traveler; D the cutter proper, d the cylinder thereof, d a piston rod working in the cylinder, cl2 the cutting tool, d3 handles for guiding the cutter in its work, and alla pipe for admitting steam or compressed air to the cylinder; E a Weight or jacket surrounding the cutter, and e trunnions on opposite sides thereof; F a strap or bail for supporting the cutter; and H a counterbalance for holding the cutter in different positions.

In the methods now usually employed in large stone quarries, the blocks of stone are scabbled into more or less regular shape for shipment; and, after delivery, they are dressed to their desired size and thus made ready for use. This scabbling is performed by hand, which necessarily makes it slow and expenslve.

The object of my invention is to provide for the scabbling and dressing of stone by machinery.

My improved stone cutter consists essentially of a Weighted cutter, suspended in such manner that it can be easily moved and held in different positions as desired.

In making myimproved stone cutter, I erect a jib crane in any suitable position at the quarry, so that large blocks of stone taken out can be placed at any desirable point thereunder. The cutter, which is suspended from the crane, is adapted to be raised by falls or or counterbalance to any desired height, and to be oscillated on trunnions at any angle necessary for operation on the stone surface. The cutter is preferably suspended from a trolley or traveler, so that it can be moved back and forth and adapted to operate on any portion of the stone, or in a mine, as desired. It is thus/made a very efficient tool, especially adapted for use in mines and quarries, where any number of inconceivable positions are oftentimes required.

The cutter proper is preferably surrounded by a weighted jacket to receive and neutralize the impact, and thus make it possible for the operator to hold the cutter in position, notwithstanding the force of the blow. I prefer to make this weighted jacket separate from the cutter, so as to permit the cutter to be readily removed therefrom for repairs, or for the insertion of new ones. So far as regards this Weighted jacket, the cutter is directly the opposite of all similar devices with whichI am acquainted, the same being generally made as light as possible, and securely fastened.

The cutter, being capable of being swung or moved around at will, may be held in different positions by the operator. In this respect it also diifers from all similar constructions with which I am acquainted, the same being rigid or mechanically held in fixed position when in use.

It will of course be understood that I do not intend to limit myself to minor features or details of construction, or to the use of my iuvention in stone work merely, the same being capable of use for other purposes. On the contrary, I intend to vary form and construction, to omit parts 0 1' use equivalents, and to use my invention for other purposes, as circumstances may suggest or render expedient.

I claiml. In combination with a support, a cutter surrounded by a weighted jacket and suspended in trunnions, wherebyit may be moved and held in different positions, substantially as described.

2. The combination of a power operating cutter, and a Weightedjacket surrounding the cutter to neutralize the impact in cutting, substantially as described.

3. In combination with a vpower operating cutter, a Weighted jacket surrounding the same to neutralize the impact of the cutting, and means for suspending the cutter in an adjustable manner, substantially as described.

4. The combination of a power operating cutter, a Weighted jacket surrounding the same to neutralize the impact of the cutting, means for suspending the cutter in an adjustable manner, means for moving it radially, and means for moving it laterally, substantially as described.

5. The combination of a power operating cutter, a Weighted jacket surrounding the cutter to neutralize the impact of the cutting, a counter balance holding the stone cutter in suspension in an adjustable manner, a traveler for moving it radially, and a crane for moving it laterally, substantially as described.
