UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS G. MEYER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WINDOW-GUARfi.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,916, dated June 6, 1893. Application filed February 23, 1893- Seriul No. 463.339. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIUS C. MEYER, of New York city, New York, have invented an Improved Window-Guard, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a window guard which is placed between the lower sash and the window frame, and which is so constructed that it will always fill the opening beneath the sash, no matter to what extent the latter is opened.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of a window provided with my improved guard and showing the lower sash lowered. Fig.2 is an elevation partlyin section of the window, with the lower sash raised. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line an, 90, Fig. 4, and Fig. 4 a cross section on line y y, Fig. 3.
The letter 11, represents a window frame and b, is the lower sash adapted to be raised or lowered within the frame, as usual.
Between the lower edge of the sash b, and the lower rail a, of the window frame a, my improved guard is secured. This guard con? sists of a pair of rods 0, pivotally secured to the two corners of the sash b, and adapted to be received by tubes 0, which are pivotally secured to the two diagonally opposite corners of the rail 0.. It will be seen that by raising and lowering the sash, the rods will be more or less telescoped by their tubes, so that in'this Way the guard will automatically adapt itself to exactly fill the opening beneath he sash. If the sash is entirely closed, the
guard is received by a groove a of rail 0. (Fig. 4).
I prefer to so construct the guard, that it may be detached from the sash if desired. To this effect the rods 0, are not pivoted directly to the sash b, but to an intervening rail d. This rail is mortised at its upper edge as at cl, for the reception of locking bolts d secured to sash b.
When the guard is not to be used, the rail 01, is unlocked from sash b, and then the rail (1, together with the folded guard, remains concealed within the window rail 0., and is entirely out of action. But when the guard is to be put into operation, the rail d, is locked to the sash b, whereupon the guard will open and close with the sash in the manner already described.
What I claim isu 1. The combination of a window frame and sash with an intervening guard consisting of a pair of pivoted rods and a pair of diagonally placed pivoted tubes which telescope the rods, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a window frame and sash with a rail d, adapted to be locked to the sash, a pair of rods pivoted to said rail and with a pair of diagonally placed pivoted tubes which telescope the rods, substantially as specified.
JULIUS O. MEYER.
