`To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Dniees, of Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain `new and useful Improvements in Daling-Presses; and I do hereby declare the'following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in baling-presses, more especially designed for baling hay, the object being to produce a baling press that is simpler in construction, less expensive, more durable, and more eihcient than the presses of the variety indicated that have heretofore been devised.
With this object in View, my invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, partly in vertical section on line 1-1, Fig. 2, of so much of a baling-press as is considered necessary to show in order to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan, partly in section, of the mechanism employed for reciprocating the compressing-plunger. Fig. 3 is a perspective in detail.
A represents the inclosing casing or framework endwise whereof reoiprocates the oompressing-plunger, B, and O represents a hopper at which the hay or material to be baled is fed in advance of plunger B.
D represents a right and left-handed screw, that, at the forward end, terminates in a plain portion CZ to the forward extremity whereof plungerB is operatively connected in such a manner that screw D will rotate without rotating the plunger. Screw D, at the rear end of plain portion d, has bearing in the hub of bevel-gear E to which the screw is rotatably connected preferably by the well known means of groove and feather, as at c, the groove being formed in section d of the screw and being of sufficient length to accommodate the full stroke of the screw. Gear E has suitable bearing in partitionaof the frame-work D D2 represent, respectively, the right and nleft-handed sections of screw D, and a' a2 rep- -gether with the follower is held in place upon the screw by means of shoulder or collar d aforesaid and a collar, d3, rigidly mounted at the rear of loose collar d2.
H H represent two pairs of sliding blocks secured, respectively, to uprights or partitions a c2, blocks H being located at opposite sides of the right-hand section of the screw and blocks H being located at opposite sides of the left-handed section of the screw. lPairs of blocks H H are substantially the same in construction, a pair being shown detached in Fig. 3, the blocks being slotted, as at h, for the passage of bolts h', that secure the blocks to their respective supports a d2, and the blocks being screw-threaded on their inner sides, that is, on the sides adjacent screw D, right or left-handed to correspond with the threads of the respective threaded sections of screw D, the threads of blocks H being adapted to engage the threads of section D and the threads of blocks H being adapted to engage the threads of section D2. The slidingblocks H H on one side of screw, D, are provided with upright studs or pins h2 that engage elongated slots I in plates I pivoted, as at I2, to the sliding-blocks at the opposite side of screw D. Plates I are operatively connected with each other by means of a link .I that is provided with a laterally and outwardly-projecting arm or member, J', adapted to be engaged by dogs or projections g g2, of forwardly-extending arm g of follower G.
The reciprocation of screw D is effected by the mechanism just described. The draw- IOO ings exhibit theparts in position at the coinmencement of the rearward stroke of the screw and connected compressing plunger, when studs orpins hzare in engagement with the rear end of slots I in plates I and dogs or projections grg2 are at the extreme of theiry forward movement, dog or projection `g2 be-' ing still in engagement with the lateral army of link J.
One or the other pair of sliding-blocks is always in engagement with screw D and in the position of parts shown blocks H are in engagement wit-h the screw While blocks H. are out of engagement with said screw. The rotation of screw D beingin the direction indicated by the arrow, it follows that during .the rotationof vsaid screw while lefthanded threaded blocksH are in engagement with lthecorrespondingly"threaded section of thel screw, the screw and'connecting plunger B; will be receded topermit the feederto'deliver another batch-of hay or material to be baled within the range of the plunger.

The screw-threads ofscrew D and blocks H 'H' are of :the ratchet variety; the .threads should have a coarsepitch, preferably/about an-inch;.the length of the-screw-th'readed -secytions of the screwshould be -suchasto sufficientlyaccommodate the full stroke ofthe .screw,and dogs orrprojectionsg g2 should be located-such a distance apart thatA .they will engage lateral arm J of link J kat the'properl time.
lThe mechanism hereinbefore described for operating compressing plunger B, itxwill be observed, is not only exceedinglysimple .in construction, and comparatively inexpensive, ybut is durable and not liableto get out of order.
lAnother important featu re of my invention consistsin the connection of the feeder opleratively with reciprocating-screw D.

Ina Vbaling-press, in combination, the compressing-plunger, a right vand leftfhanded screw connectedwith the .plunger substantially as described,.t=wo pairs of -screw-threaded-blocks, H H', adapted :to engage, respectively, the right and left-handedsections of the screw, the'blocks of a pair beinglocated at opposite sides of the screw, mechanism for IOC ITO
simultaneously actuating said blocks, the one pair ot' blocks into and the other pair vof blocks out of engagement with the respective threaded sections of the screw, and comprising the following elements -a pair of plates, I, pivoted to the blocks at one side of the screw and slotted as at I', studs or pins rigid with the other blocks and engaging slots I', a link J connecting said plates and provided with an arm or projecting member, J', and an arm or member g, connected and adapted to reciprocate with the screw and provided with dogs or projections, g, g2, the arrangement of parts being substantially as and for the purpose I5 set forth.
4. In a baling press, the combination with a compressing plunger, and a rotary right and GEORGE W. DRIGGS.
