CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,789, dated June 6, 1893. Application filed March 8, 1893. Serial No. 466,186. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, YVILLIAM N. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woodburn, in the county of Clark and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplers; andIdo hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in car couplers and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and definitely pointed out in the claim.
The object of this invention is the provision in car couplers of means by which the cars are held firmly and securely in a coupled position and are easily uncoupled, also uniting simplicity and cheapness of construction. These objects are obtained by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an end of a car showing my improved coupler. Fig. 2 is ahorizontal section of the draw bar and head.

F is an aperture in the top and bottom of the drawh ead.
Within the drawhead is secured the coupling hook E, by means of the vertical hollow bar E secured at rightangles to the coupling hook and the pin H" which passes through the apertureF in the drawhead and through the hollow bar E on the coupling hook. The hollow bar E is of a length long enough to allow it to fit snugly into the drawhead and when the pin F is passed through the aperture F in the drawheacl and the hollow bar the coupling hook will be held firmly and securely in position. By this construction the coupling hook is prevented from having any but a sidewise or right and left movement.
0n the side of the drawhead is a cylindrical casing K having a cap K formed with an enlarged aperture G therein. The drawing rod Gr passes through the aperture G in the cap K in the side of the drawhead and at its outer end is bent at right angles and slidingly secured to a loop II on the vertical lever H extending from above the top of the car and secured thereto by means of the securing brace I, extending outward from the front of the car, which also serves as a fu1- crum.
L is a notched segment secured to the front of the car by means of suitable bolts L and M isa spring pawl secured to the lever H in a any suitable manner the teeth M of which engage the notch segment L.
O is a coil spring on the rod G resting on the side of the coupler hook and the cap K on the casing on the side of the drawhead. This coiled spring is so arranged that by its expansion it will tend to force the coupler hook in and hold the same in a parallel position with the side of the drawhead, and thus firmly engage with the coupler hook of the adjacent car. It will be seen that by moving the lever I'I either to the right or left the rod G will be moved sidewise thereby parting the coupler hooks and uncoupling the cars. By having the drawing rod G slidingly connected tothe vertical lever H when the cars are to be coupled, the coupling hook E can engage the hook on the adjacent car without moving the vertical lever H the coiled spring resting on the side of the coupling hook by it tension will force the coupling hooks together thereby automatically coupling the cars.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a car coupler, the combination of a drawhead, having an aperture in the top and bottom thereof, a coupling hook, a vertical hollow bar secured to the coupling hook at right angles thereto, a pin passing through the apertures in the drawhead and hollow bar, a cylindrical casing on the side of the drawhead, an apertured cap on the casing, a horizontal drawing rod secured to the coupling hook, a spring on the drawing I rod between the coupling hook and cap on the casing, a In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in gight Cimgle eXf'iESion oln tllie drawingdrod presence of two witnesses.
