Description

A(No Model.)
M. M. COPE.
. A SAW HANDLE. No. 498,626. Patented May 30, 1893.
UNrTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARSHALL MERITT COPE, OF NOYO, CALIFORNIA.
SAW-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming` part 0f Letters Patent NO. 498,626, dated May 30, 1893.
l Application filed December 31, 1892. Serial No. 456.898. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARSHALL MERITT COPE, a citizen of the United States, residing at N oyo, Mendocino county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Saw- Handles; and I hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to the class of sawhandles adapted to be readily fitted and adjusted to the saw and removed again when necessary.
My invention consists in a stock having a forwardly projecting flange provided with holding pins or lugs for engaging the holes in the saw blade, a sliding clamp fitted to the stock and adapted to bear on the rear edge of the saw andhold it tightly on the pins, and an oscillatory handle in rear end of the stock provided or formed with a cam actingagainst the sliding clamp to force it to its work and to relieve it, all of which, together with details of construction and arrangement Ishall hereinafter fully describe.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective saw-handle adapted to be readily fitted to the saw-blade, and as easily removed when necessary.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention,-Figure l is a perspective view of my saw-handle, showing it applied. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of same.
A is'the stock having a forwardly projecting flange ct in which are the holding pins or lugs a. Upon this flange is mounted and adapted to slide the clamp B, which is formed with an overhanging top lip b, and a rearwardly extending shank b playingin a groove a2 in the stock and having a cross-head b2 by which it is confined. The rear end of the stock is formed with socket bearings a3 in which is fitted and adapted to oscillate the sleeve C, which is formed or provided with a cam c adapted to impinge upon the cross-head b2 of the clamp shank. This sleeve receives the handle D, or if preferred, it may form part of the handle itself.
The use of the device is as follows: The rear end of the saw S is provided with holes which flt over the pins or lugs a', so that the saw rests upon or against the flange ct of the stock. The handle l) is then turned, whereby the cam c bearing against the rear or inner end of clamp B, forces said clamp forwardly against the edge of the saw, with the lip b of the clamp overlapping said edge. Thus the saw is bound and firmly held upon the pins or lugs.
To remove the device, the handle D is turned in the opposite direction whereby its cam c relieves the clamp which, upon being pushed back, will permit the saw to be removed from the holding pins or lugs.
In order to fit the device to saws having different holes, one of the holding pins or lugs a may be made adjustable in the flange a of the stock. This may be done by having a slot a4 in the flange, in which the lug may be moved and said lug maybe set bya thumb nut 61,5.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A saw-handle consisting of a stock having a forwardly projecting flange provided with holding pins or lugs over which the saw is fitted, a sliding clamp tted to said stock and playing over its flange whereby it is adapted to be set up to and removed from the rear edge of the saw, and an oscillatory handle or piece mounted in the rear end of the stock and having a cam adapted to bear upon and to relieve the rear end of the clamp, substantially as herein described.
2Q A saw-handle consisting of a stock having a forwardly projecting flange, provided with holding pins or lugs over which the saw is fitted, a sliding clamp fitted to said stock and playing over its flange whereby it is adapted to be set upto and removed from the rear edge of the saw, said clamp having a forwardly projecting top lip adapted to overlap the saw, and an oscillatory handle or piece mounted in the rear end of the stock and having a caln adapted to bear upon and to relieve the rear end of the clamp, substantially as herein described.
3. A saw-handle consisting of a stock having a forwardly projecting flange, an adjustable holding pin or lug secured to said flange and adapted to receive the saw, a sliding clamp tted to said stock and playing over its flange In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my whereby it is adapted to be set up to and rehand. moved from the rear edge of the saw, and an oscillatory handle or piece mounted in the MARSHALL MERITT COPE' 5 rear end of the stock and having a cam adapt- Witnesses:
ed to bear upon and to relieve the rear end of H. A. WELLER, the clamp, substantially as herein described. M. F. WELLER.
