` STILLW NUT LOG..
10.498,368. Y Patented May 30,1893.
UNITED STATES PAT-ENT OFFICE.
ELIAS STILLWELL, or RockvILLE, MISSOURI, AssIeNoR oE ONE-HALE To BERNARD P. .IARREIL on SAME PLACE.
N U T L O C K SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,368, dated May 30, 1893.
Application iiled October l5, 1892. Serial No. 448,982. (No model.)
T0 all whom t may concern:
.Be it known that I, ELIAS STILLWELL a cltlzen of the United States, residing at Rockville, in the county of Bates and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Nut- Look, of which the following is a specification.
I Vly invention relates to nut locks; and the o bJects in view are to provide a cheap and simple construction of lock inherent in the bolts themselves and adapted when applied to securely and eifectually lock the nuts upon the bolts and prevent any possibility of them ever getting loose.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawingsr--Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a bolt and nut, the latter secured upon the former in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail in perspective 0f the locking wedge or key. Fig. 3 is a detail in elevation of the bolt previous to the insertion of the wedge and the application of the nut.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates a bolt, whose body or spindle portion below the series of threads is provided with a transverse perforation 2, the same being cylindrical, whereby it may be readily drilled. From its outer extremity to this point the said bolt is provided with a longitudinal slit, or in other words a split as indicated at 3. The bolt has mounted on it in the usual manner an ordinary nut 4.
5 designates a wedge-shaped key, whose extremity is thin, and which may be provided at one end with a head 6. This key is considerably longer than the slit in the bolt, and
rolled up as indicated at 7 forming a shoulder which prevents or resists any withdrawal of the aforesaid key from its position. The keyis narrower than the diameter of the bolt, and hence its edges cannot come in contact with anything likely to disturb it, or with the threads of the nut. By the insertion of the key, as will be obvious, the opposite bifurcations of the bolt, as formed by the split, are wedged apart thus increasing the diameter of the bolt to such an extent as to prevent any likelihood of the nut being retrograded or run off the bolt.
From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that l have provided an" exceedingly cheap and simple means of fastening nuts rigidly upon their bolts, which means may be readily applied without injury to the nuts or any special tools.
In the construction of lock illustrated in Figsl to 3 of the drawings,it will be obvious that an ordinary pair of pinchers may be introduced over the head 6 of the key, and thus the same be withdrawn from the slotof the bolt, the shoulder at the inner end of the key readily unrolling. After this the nut maybe removed by the application of an ordinary wrench.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- The combination with a bolt having a drilled opening formed transversely therein, and split longitudinally from said opening to its outer end, of a thin wedge-shaped key driven between the bifurcations of the bolt and having its inner extremity curled or bent within the perforation forming the shoulder, and a nut mounted on the bolt, substantially as specified.`
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ELIAS STILLWELL.
