ROCKING-CHAIR FAN ATTACHMENT.

Be it known that I, MARTIN M. RUTH, a citilzen of the United States, residing at Philadclphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Rocking-Chair Fan Attachment, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a fan attachment for rocking chairs, the objects in View being to provide an attachment capable of universal application, which may be readily connected and disconnected, and which is simple in con'` structlon, may be cheaply manufactured, and

is el'ective in operation.

In the drawings,'Figure 1 is a perspective between the end of the base and a removable guide-bar, C. Adjacent to this guide-slot is a vertical plate, D, provided at points corresponding in position to the ends of the rocker, E, of the chair, F, with arc-shaped slots, G G, said slots being designed to receive lateral pins, I-I H, carried by the ends of the said rocker.

A standard,l, arranged upon the base at a suitable distance from the transverse plate, D, is provided with -a bearing e', aligned with a similar bearing, d, in the plate, and in said bearings is mounted the shaft, J, carrying the ixed ratchet-wheels, K and K', between which are arranged the loose-drums, L L', carrying pawls, M, to engage the ratchet-wheels, respectively. To these drums are connected the operating cords, N N', which, after passing around guide-rolls, n n', arranged in the plane of the base, are attached tothe pins which operate in the arc slots in the vertical plate, whereby as the Vchair is rocked the drums are alternately rotated. The operating cords are wound upon their respective drums in the same direction, whereby when the cords are drawn both drums are turned in the same direction. t

upon their inner or adjacent sides, are retraction tofthat in which they are turnedv bythe voperating cords, so that after having been turned in one direction and the cord partly or Wholly unreeled, the drum is returned to its normal position and the cord reeled thereon again by the retraction spring. The pawls engage the'ratchet-wheels in one directionV only, namely, the direction in which the drums are turned by the operating cords. The shaft also carries a bevel-gear, Q, which meshes with a bevel-pinion, R, attached to the fau-shaft, S, said shaft being mounted in a suitable sup# porting frame-Work, il, and providedwith a fan, U. The operation of `my fan attachment is as follows: A rocking-chair having been placed parallel with the vertical guide-plate, D, with itsncar rocker in the. guide-slot, as indicated in the drawin`gs,Fig. l, and the operatingv cords attached to the pins upon the extremities of the rockers and operating in the guide slots provided for that purpose, when -th'e chair is rocked the extremities of the ynear rocker alternately rise, and as each extremity rises it turns the drum to which it is connected in the direction indicated by the dart yin Fig. 2. When the drums are turned in said indicated'direction, or forward as I Will term it, they respectively engage and rotate the ratchet-wheels and consequently the shaft, thereby `operating the fan,and when the drums are individually released from the tension of the operating cords they are rotated in the opposite direction, to wind the operating cords, by the above described retraction-springs. Thus the fan-shaft is rotated continuously in one direction indicated by the dart in Fig. 2.

In applying my invention to aspring rock- IOO bearing being provided lfor the adjacent end v of the main shaft, and the ends of the operating1 cords being fastened to the ends of the seat in any approved manner.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a device of the class described, the combination of a stationary frame-work adapted io rest upon the Hoor and provided with a vertical guard-plate provided With curved `gfnide slots, lateral pins attached to opposite extremities of a chair-rocker, a rotatable mainshatt, drn ms loosely mounted upon said shaft and provided with retraction springs, and pawl and ratchet connections with said shaft, independent cords reeled in the saine direction upon said drums and connected respectively to the pins carried by the chair-rocker, a fan shaft and operating connections between the main shaft and the fan-shaft, substantially as specified.
