- Be it known that I, JAMES G. DULANY, of the city of Hannibal, Marion county, and State of Missouri, have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Lecks, of whieh tl1e following isa full,clear,and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invenlzion relates t0 improvements in nnt locks and consists in the novel arrangern'ent and combination of parts, as will be more fnlly hereinafter deseribed and designated in the'a claims.
The objeet of my invention is to construot I 5 an improved deviee for locking nuts, said device serving as awasher and when in position absolntely prevehts the movig of the nnt in either direction.

2 indicates longitudinal plates located upon both sides 0f the rail between the tread sind the base flange. Bo lts 3 pass through said plates 2 and rail l,and are provided thr0ughout substantially one-half of their length with a V-shaped groove 4.
The lock-washer 5 eonsists of a rectangnlar plate made of brass, eop; er galvanized iron, Rssiairon or in fact; any 0f the wellknown sheet-metals. The lock-washen 5 is provided with'a cqntral opening 6, tl1e same in diameter as 1@l1e bolb 3 and projecting into the opening 6 is an inverted V-shaped projeetion 7 formed integrally With the rmaining portion of Lhe lock-washer 5. The projection 6 is of the same size as tl1 e grooves 4 in the bolts 3 and is adapted to engage in the same to prevent Ehe turning of the lockwasher around the holt when bhe nut is tiglrtened against thq same. The 111113 8 is pro-' vided with an inwardly eXte nding opening 91 in which is located a pin 10, the inner end 0f '75 which conforms with the shape 0f the groove 4, into which it is adapted t0 engage. The nnt 8 can be provided with one pin Opening as shown in Fig. 1, tw0 pin openings as shown'in Fig. 12 and four a s shown in Fig. 12 0r ratheriivould b'e provided with these numbeisof Openings9, only one pin being necessary for each nut. The object of having a multiplicity f openings 9 for the reizeption of the pins 10, is that' the pin may be put in the opening nearest the groove when thanut is Set, because the J1l1t can usually be tightened enough to bring said pin into said 'groove. The nut having'been sei; as
shown in Fig.l,one 0r more of the corners of 0 the lock-washer 5 are bent at right angles with the main portion of the lock washer and against tl1e sides of the nuts and they absolutely prevent the backing of the nut ofi the threads. The corner facing the end of the'g5 pin 10 is necessarily bent 130 hold said pin, and it is unnecessary to bend any of the other eorners unless it; is so desired.
In Fig. 4: is shown a modified eoxistruction, the holt 11 being provided with a rectangular groove 12, into which a coincidentprojection into the opening of the washer is adapted to fit. v
I1'fFig. 5 is shown a modifieation wherein the holtl3 is provided with a U-shaped groov6 14, and the lock-Washer with a coincidingly shaped projection.
In Fig. 6 is shown an additional modification wherein the groove in the holt 15 is of dove-tailed form, said groove 16 adapted for the reception of asimilarly shaped projection upon the lock-washer.
In Fig. 7 is shown the holt 17 with a. groove 18 which is adapted for the reception of a. projection upon 1she washer, whieh is substantially of a truncated oonieal form when viewed in plan elevation.
In Fig. 9 is shown an additional modifieation wherein the holt 19 is provided with two longitudinal grooves 20 which are V-shaped and adapted 130 receive coincidingly shaped projec tions 21 on the lock-washer.
In Fig. 11 I show the lock-washer provided with grooves 22, which extend across one cor- 'ner of t he rectangular shape of th'e washer,
-thisgroove being provided to enable the operators to moxe readily turn the corner of t-l 1e lock np against the nnt.
Although not herein shown, said lock-washer could be provided with ainulipiplicity of these grooves extending aoross the corners of same withont in any way weakening the eonsfirnction of the washeror affecting the material idea of nxy inven'tion.

is absolutely'irremov- When it is desired to remove the nut, the 0 washer oorners which are turned up, are easily forced back into their normal plane, thus en' abling the removal of the nut, the material of whieh the lock-washer is made permitting of repetition of this operation a number of times without affecting fhe strength of the lock. It will readily be seen how tho loeation of the pin engaging as it does a groove, and the additional loeking of the nut by the bening of the 'washer corner carries ont the idea of my invention.
The modified forms of grooves and projections shown, are all used in connection with the pins, as this construction facilitates a surer locking of Lhe parts and does not in any way weaken the nut.
Having fully described my invention,what I claim is As an improvement in nut-locks, the combination, with a holt provided with one 01' more longitudinal grooves, a nut adapted to bo disposed thereon and provided with one or more transverse bores or apertures, anda pin insentiblo in one of the latter and into one of the holt; grooves,of a. lock-washer provided in its eye with one 01 more projeclaing studs adapted to engage the gro0ve or grooves in the holt, said washer being adapted to have one of its corner's baut over the 5ide of the nnt containing the pin; snbstantially as set forth.
