SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,890, dated May 23, 1893.

Be it known that I, JAMES OLIVER, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molding-Flasks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in molding flasks.
Hitherto in chilling plow irons and especially the points of plows a movable chill has been employed for the purpose and consequently it has been necessary to make the molding flask larger than would otherwise be necessary in order to receive and retain the chill during the process of molding. Also in former constructions of flasks considerably more than the necessary amount of sand has been required, and the size of the flask has been necessarily increased, thus adding to the weight, amount of molding sand required and to the general expense attending the manufacture of the flasks andthe articles molded in them. In addition to the fact that heretofore the flask was unnecessarily large in order to receive the pattern, chill and article cast, in the use of a movable chill, there was always more or less liability of the chill springing when the molten metal struck it which resulted in making the edge of the point or other article thicker at each end than in the center.
The object of this invention is to diminish the time, labor and expense of production and produce better results in chilling by preventing the chill from moving or warping thereby evenly distributing the metal and forming an article of uniform thickness.
With this object in view my invention consists in a flask having a chill with a braced or ribbed back and in certain other features of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved flask. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a view in perspective with the cope section partly raised.
A represents the drag section of the flask ably hinged together for convenience in manipulating the flask before and after the process of molding. Of course this general shape could be greatly varied but I prefer the shape shown and described because it reduces the sand necessary about two-thirds and hence diminishes the weight and the expense'of molding. The outer edges of the flask may be parallel but the inner edges are necessarily more or less irregular but are made to correspond with and fit each other in the usual way.
The body of one section of the flask, preferably the drag is larger than the other, and the other section, the cope in this instance, is provided with a flange 1 which extends from the edge of the cope to the edge of the drag forming a chill against which the cutting edge of the point is formed. This chill may be a separate part and be fastened by bolts, screws or rivets if desired. Thus the chill is a part of one of the sections, either an integral part of it or rigidly secured thereto and by extending laterally at an angle from one edge of the section, this chill is braced from end to end, thus preventing its warping or bending when the molten metal strikes it as heretofore which resulted in making a casting thicker at certain parts than at others.
By this invention the edge of the flask section by being at an angle to the chill removes any possibility of the latter from bending and the articles chilled are straight and of uniform thickness throughout as a result of this provision. The chill is thus outside of the body of the cope so that the size of the portion which contains the sand is considerably lessened. The hinges 2, 2, are conveniently formed on the outer edge of the chill.
It is evident that slight changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction set forth, but
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A flask for molding plow points comprising cope and drag sections made to substantially conform to the shape of the article to be molded, one of the sections having a chill formed therein, the inner edge of the chill being integral with and at an angle to one side of the section, and the remaining two sides of the section joining the chill side at acute angles whereby the frame of the section braces the chill at the two ends and at the back to the end that the chill is braced, made rigid and prevented from warping so that the edge of the article chilled is made uniform throughout its length, substantially as set forth.
2. Amolding flask comprisingcope and drag sections made to conform to each other and having a general triangular shape, one section having a chill integral with one side thereof, said chill extending at an angle to the side of the frame whereby the side forms a longitudinal rib and the other two sides of the section extend from the ends of the chill and chill side of the frame at an acute angle to the end that the chill is braced from the back and ends and prevented from Warping, substantially as set forth.
