s. BOWLES. WASHING MACHINE.
Patented May 16,1893.
INVENTOR:
WITNESSES Attorney.
uq, wAsHwcTuN u c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEWART BOWLES, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,701, dated May 16, 1893. Application filed April 12,1892. Serial No. 428.896- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEWART B. BOWLES,a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination VVashing Machines and'lables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in washing machines and has for its object to produce a device of this character of asimple, compact and durable construction wherein are present certain novel and useful features of construction all as will be hereinafter fully described and carefully defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention-Figure 1 is a general perspective view .of a washing machine constructed in accordance with my invention and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal mid-section of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view illustrating certain details of construction to be referred to hereinafter.
In the views A is a tub mounted on folding legs a and provided in its interior with projecting studs or screws a on which rests the segmental roller bed B composed of the curved side-pieces b and parallel rollers 1)".
E E represent transverse stays arranged near the bottom of the tub and serving to receive any undue downward pressure on the roller bed B.
The dasher C is mounted in and carried by an adjustable frame D composed of side bars (1 united at their ends by braces and to one end of these side bars is hinged a second frame E, the opposite ends of the side bars (2 of which are pivoted to the end of tub A as clearly seen.
The dasher G is composed of side pieces 0 and a convex rubbing face o composed of slats c said slats being grooved or roughened on their under sides which face the roller bed B so as to produce the necessary rubbing action.
A transverse round or brace F is secured at its ends at or near the center of the side pieces (10f frame D and passes through the side pieces 0 of the dasher having reduced portions fat its opposite ends which pass through slots 9* in the respective uprights g of a handle G the upper ends of which uprights are united by a transverse round as clearly seen in Fig. 1. The shoulders f formed by reducing or cutting down the ends f of the round F bear as will be readily understood, against the inner faces of the uprights g beyond the slots g and prevent the forcing or bending of the same inward when pressure is brought to bear on the dasher in using the machine.
The lower ends of the uprights g are bifurcated or notched and the notches h thereof engage studs or screws h set in the side pieces 0 of the dasher 0 whereby the lower ends of the uprights of the handle G may be securely locked to the dasher when it is desired to use the machine, and may be also readily detached and folded over within the dasher when not in use.
Having thus described my invention, I. claim- The combination with the frame D composed of side rails d united by rounds, of the dasher 0 arranged between said side rails (l and having side pieces 0, said side pieces of the dasher and the side rails of the frame being provided with registering perforations, the handle having uprights provided with slots g registering with the perforations of the dasher, the lower ends of said uprights being notched, the studs h on the side pieces of the dasher in position to engage the notched lower ends of the uprights of the handle, and the brace F having reduced ends engaging the slots of the uprights and the perforations of the side pieces of the dasher and of the side rails of the frame D, the main central portion of said brace between said reduced ends having a diameter greater than the width of the slots in the uprights of the handle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto afiix my signature this 12th day of March, A. D. 1892.
STEWART B. BOVVLES. [L. s]
In presence of- J AS. J. MCAFEE, .i. M. E. HARRISON.
