CAR-DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,218, dated May 9, 1893.
Application nativit '7, 1892.
To all whom it mag concern.-
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON ROY, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more especially to inside doors for grain cars, and their fastenin gs, and it has for its object to provide a car door of this character, which can be easilymanipulated and operated without the necessity of using crow bars and the like.
It has also for its object to construct such a door whose attachments for fastening and holding the same in place will not interfere with the use or capacity of the car for transporting coal or other freight.
With these and other minor objects in view and which will hereinafter be referred to my invention consists in the peculiar arrangement and novel combination of parts all of which will hereinafter be fully described in the specification and particularlypointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a portion of the car with my improvements applied and disposed in their lower or locked position. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the door (elevated) and the adjacent frame work of the car. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of, the same on the line 3-3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 1-4, Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the locking catch.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A indicates a portion of the car body, and B, the usual door opening, which in the present instance has a metallic base strip 0 at its lower inner edge and side metallic plates D D which form guide ways for the sliding door, for a purpose presently described.
E indicates the sliding door which is pivotally supported by the loops 6, upon a transverse bar F, the ends of which are formed integral with or have secured thereto the cuff members or sleeves f, held to slide upon vertical rods Gr G, upon the inside of the car frame, one on each side of the car opening B, as most clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawm s.

a drum H, the shaft h of which extends to the outside of the car body and has a hand wheel h, and a ratchet wheel h with which engages a gravity pawl if, as shown.
A tube J is projected up from the casing H, in which the drum H is located and forms a guard for the lifting chain K which is secured to the drum at one end, passes up over guide pulleys K K, the free end passing down and connected to the upper end of the door E.
Upon the upper front edge of the door at each end are secured upwardly and outwardly curved arms L L, which are adapted to en gage (when the door is raised in the manner presently described) downwardly projecting roller brackets M M, in the top of the door opening.
By the aforesaid construction and arrangement of parts, it will be noticed that-,when the door is in its lowered position, it can be quickly raised to the desired height by operating the hand wheel 71. which winds up the chain and draws the door vertically upward. After the door has been elevated to the position shown in Fig. 2 and full lines Fig. 3 it can beswung up out of the way as indicated in dotted lines Fig. 3 to admit of a clear way through the opening B. This is effected by further winding up the chain. This operation. serves to further draw the door upward the arms L of which then engage the stops M and serve as the bar F continues in its upward movement to tilt or rock the door upon its pivot or hinge connections and swing it up to the approximately horizontal position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
As a simple and effective means for lock ing the door to its down or closed position, I employ the devices most clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4, which consist of a pivoted unlocking lever arm N, pivoted near its center upon a plate at mounted centrally on the front face of the door, the long member n of which is connected to the end of the lifting chain, while its short member has a locking latch 01 the purpose of which will be presently understood.
0 0 indicate oppositely extending lever arms which are pivoted at their inner ends 0 0', to the leverN on opposite sides of the pivotal bearing of the said lever N, while their outer ends are pivotally jointed to C shaped arms P P connected to the slide plates Q Q disposed at the outer ends of the door as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
To render their operation easy and positive the lever arms 0 have their stud pivots 0 operating in elongated slots 0 in the plates 0 while the plates Q Q have elongated slots q through which the headed studs (1 pass. 1
The outer vertical edges of the plates Q Q normally project slightly beyond the ends of the door E, whereby to form convenient guide members which, when the door is lowered down from itsinwardly swinging position, engage the guide ways on the sides of the door casing hereinbefore referred to. When the door is down toits lowest position its lower edge is disposed to the rear of the bottom strip 0, which serves to close the opening between. the car door and the bottom of the door and thereby effectually prevent the escape of grain which might otherwise leak out under the bottom of the said door. Each of the plates Q Q has a lock notch Q which notches engage locklugs X in the guide ways, the locking operation being effected as follows: When the door is down, by swinging the unlocking lever arm N in the directionindicated by the arrow the lock lug n will slip over anotchedlug O on the armO to which it is held by a spring finger O and as the lever is swunginthe direction statedit willthrough the arms 0 O P P force the plates Q and Q outwardand become locked in the guide ways in the manner before stated. When it is desired to elevate the door it is only necessary to slip the spring finger 0 out from the lock ing and then operate the hand Wheel which in drawing upon the chain first causes the lever to be brought to the position shown in. dotted lines Fig. 1', thereby automatically unlocking the door from the endguides, after which it can be readily raised to the position desired by a proper manipulation of the wheel 7L2.
From the. above description taken in connection with the drawings, the advantages of my improved door will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains. Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1S.-
1. The combination of the car frame hava doorway and a slide door pivotally supported at its upper end and vertically over such doorway tripping devices on the car body adapted to engage such door when elevated and swing it on its pivotal supports and means for elevating the door as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination with the car frame having a doorway, a bearing rod held to move vertically over said doorway, the door body suspended therefrom, to swing thereon, said door having projecting members adapted to engage the upper portion of the doorway as the door bearing rod with the door is elevated whereby to swing the door inward upon such rod and means for elevating the rod, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination with the doorway having roller brackets suspended at the upper edge thereof, of the vertically movable door supporting rod, the door pivotally supported at its upper end on such rod and having outwardly extending curved arms and means for elevating the said rod above the doorway, whereby the curved arms will engage the said brackets toswing the door inward on its supporting bar as such bar continues on its upward movement, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The combination of the car having a door way, a door movable vertically over said door way and pivotally supported at or near its upper end whereby it may be tilted, locking devices by which to secure the doorin closed position, lifting mechanism including a chain or cord connected with said locking mechanism and guides for said chain or cord arranged relatively to the pivotal axis of the door substantially as shown and describedwherehy draft upon said chain may unlock and then slide the door upward without tilting the same upon its pivotal axis substantially as set forth.
