SWIVEL-LOOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,668, dated May 2, 1893.

Be it known that I, HEINRICH SCHIPPERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and Stateof New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swivel-Looms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of looms that are known as swivel looms: and the object of my invention is to simplify the construction and thereby reduce the cost and simplify the operation of weaving with such loom.
The invention consists in various constructions and combination of parts and details, that will be fully described and set forth hereinafter and nally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a rear elevation of my improved swivel loom, some parts being broken out. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, some -parts being omitted. Fig. 3 is a part sectional plan-view of the same, some parts being omitted. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same, on the line t 4, of Fig. 3, parts being omitted. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail longitudinal sectional view of a sliding cam sleeve'and the gear-wheels, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged detailview of the gear-wheels, parts being broken out and others being in section on line 6-6 of Figs. 3 and 5.

The frame A of the loom is of the usual construction and is provided with the crankshaft A connected by the rod A2 with a lay A3 carrying the usualshuttle race and the swivel shuttle beam A4, which is vertically movable in relation to the lay and reed cap A40. Two vertically movable rods B are arranged and guided on the back of the lay, and are provided at their upper ends with arms B projecting to the front and supporting the swivel shuttle beam. Said rods B are pressed upward by helical springs B2 surrounding them and resting against collars B3 on the rods and against fixed stops or brackets B4 of the lay swords. The lower ends of the .rods B are connected by links B5 with two bars B6 that are secured to a rocking shaft C in the main frame A, said bars B carrying counter-weights B7at the ends opposite those Serial No. 431,151. (No model.)
connected with the links B5. The rocking shaft C is provided with an upwardly-projecting arm O', on the upper end of which a cam D can act, and which cam is fixed to a sliding sleeve D that is splined on the cam-shaft E of the frame A, so that said sleeve D turns with the shaft E but can slide on the same. The sleeve D is provided with a circumferential groove D2, into which the prongs of a fork F pass, said fork projecting downward from a rocking lever F that is pivoted c entrally7 on lugs F2 of a transverse bar F5 of the machine frame. The ends of the rocking bar F are connected by wires f with the Jacquard mechanism. ThedrivingshaftAisprovided at one end with a cog-wheel G engaging a larger cog-wheel G provided with two opposite tappets G2 that operate the picker-stick lever H.- Said cog-wheel G i's mounted on the above-mentioned cam-shaft E, and the opposite end of the cam-shaft is provided with" two like tappets g2 that operate the other picker-stick lever h. The picker-sticks H are connected with the picker-stick levers by straps in the usual manner. Each of the picker stick levers H and h is provided with a cam piece or shoe I, whichis beveled up-Y ward toward the center, and said shoes are each formed on the front end of a bar I pivoted at I2 on the top of the corresponding picker-stick lever, and the rear ends of said bars I are connected by two rods I5 with the Opposite ends of a lever I4 pivoted on a bracket 85 I5 on the rear end of the machine frame, and one of said rods I5 is pivotally connected at I6 with a lever .I pivoted on a bracket J of the frame A, and the other end of said lever J passing into a groove in a cam-sleeve that 9o will be described hereinafter.
The swivel shuttle rack that operates the shuttles vin the swivel shuttle beam in the usual manner is connected by a rod K with an arm Kwon the upper end of an upright rocking-shaft K2 mounted in a bracket on the lay and in a suitable bracket on the lay rock shaft, which upright shaft K2 is provided at its lower end with an-arm K3 that is connected bya connecting rod K4 with one end of a roo horizontally-swinging lever K5 pivoted tol a bracket K6 of the machine frame. From said lever K5 a pin L projects that passes into a groove of a cam-sleeve that will be described rto hereinafter. On that end of the shaft E op posite the one carrying the cog-wheel G a cog-wheel M is iiXed within the frame A, the cog-wheel G being outside of the frame. Adjacent to said cog-wheel M a cog-wheel N is fixed on one end of asleeve O mounted loosely on the shaft E. Said cog-wheel N is provided with a squared or polygonal collar N', against which a plate N2 rests which plate is secured to one end of a rod N3 mounted in suitable guides of the frame and acted upon by a helical spring N4 surrounding it. Said plate N2 bearing against the sides of the polygonal collar N serves to hold the wheel N and sleeve O in diiferent positions until forcibly movedY out of such positions. By the turning of the collar N the plate N2 is pushed back until the collar has made a quarter turn, when said collar is again held temporarily in position by said spring-.pressed plate. On a pin P projecting from the frame A two pinions Q Q are mounted and which are connected to rotate together, the pinion Q engaging the cog-wheel M and the pinion Q engaging the cog-wheel N. The pinion Q is provided with teeth only on half of its circumference, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6. On the sleeve O a cam-sleeve R is mounted by means of a spline or key in such a manner that the sleeve R can slide on the sleeve, O, but rotates with the latter. Said sleeve R is provided with the `two annular grooves a l), and with the spiral cam A- groove CZ. A similar camsleeve R is mounted on a sleeve O iixed on the other end of the shaft E in such a manner that the cam-sleeve R can slide on the sleeve O', but rotates with the same. Said sleeve R is provided with the annular grooves a b and with the spiral cam groove d. The end of the lever J, pivoted on the bracket J and previously described, enters the groove b of the sleeve R, and the pin L on the swinging lever K5 enters the groove b of the sliding sleeve R. Above the cam-sleeve R a lever S is pivoted on a standard T of the cross bar F3, and the outer end of said lever S is pivoted at t to the rocking'lever F. Above the cam-sleeve R a like lever S is pivoted at T on the bar F3, and at its outer end is pivoted at t to the lever F. From the lever S two pins m and n project downward through a guide U on the under side of the bar F3, and in like manner two pins m n project downward from the pivoted lever S through a guide U on the under side of the bar F3, the pins m n being above the grooves d and a respectively of the cam-sleeve R and the pins m n being above the grooves d cl. respectively of the sliding sleeve R. The rack s on the swivel shuttle beam, pinion t and weighted lever r serve for shifting the swivel shuttle beam in regard to the design to be produced, and forni no part of this invention.
The operation is as follows: Vhen the loom is doing plain weaving, the left-hand end of the lever F is raised (looking from the rear, as in Fig. l) and the right-hand is lowered,
the pins at n being in the grooves a and a of the sliding sleeves R R respectively. When the swivel shuttles are to be brought in operation, the swivel shuttle beam must be lowered, and then reciprocated and the ordinary pickersticks must be stopped. At that time the lever F is brought in the position shown in Fig. l: that is, the left-hand end is lowered and the right-hand end raised. Thereby the pins u n', which previously locked the sleeves R R in position and prevented them from sliding--are raised, and the pins m m are lowered and pass into the cam grooves d cl of the sleeves R R. By the action of said pins on the sides of the cam grooves d d', the sleeves R R are'nioved to the right. Thereby that end of the lever J in the groove b of .the sleeve R is moved to the right and the opposite end is moved to the left, and thereby the rods l2 are moved in such a manner as to swing those ends of the bars l with which they are connected toward each other, and the outer ends of the bars carrying the calnshoes or heads I are swung outward, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3: that is, they are moved out of the path of the tappets G2 and g2 respectively, and thus the picker-stick levers H h are no longer actuated. At the same time bythe above described movement of the lever F the sleeve D is brought in such a position that its cam D can act on the arm'C of the rocking shaft C and presses the upper end of said arm C in the direction of the arrow fr, Fig. et. Thereby those ends of the bars B connected with the vertical rods B supporting the swivel shuttle beam are pressed down and said swivel shuttle beam is thus brought in lowered position for the operation of the swivel shuttles. As the pinion Q has only teeth on half its circumference, it follows that the sleeve O must remain in aposition of rest during half the rotation of said pinion, and is locked in these positions of rest by the spring pressed plate N2 acting on the collar N. When the machine is set for swivel weaving, the swivel shuttle beam is lowered once for each revolution of the shaft E, but does not remain in lowered position during said entire revolution. The pickersticks ordinarily make two picks for each rol tation of the shaft E, but by the sliding of the cam-sleeve R the cam-heads I on the pickern stick levers are moved out of the way once during each rotation of the shaft E, and thus each picker-stick, instead of making tWo picks for each rotation of the shaft E makes only one pick when the loom is set for swivel Weaving, and this pick is made when the swivel shuttle beam is in raised position. Likewise the swivel shuttles must make a pick at the time when the ordinary picker-sticks are at rest, and for this reason the sleeve R remains at rest when the picker-sticks operate. Or in other' words the sleeve R must be shifted twice for each time that the sleeve Ris shifted once, as the sleeve R must move the camheads H on the picker-sticks once out of the way and back again for each rotation of the shaft E, and the sleeve R must cause the swivel shuttle to make only one pick. If the sleeve R were rotated as uniformly as the sleeve R', the swivel shuttles would make two picks-that is, one during the time that the cam-heads on the picker-stick levers are out of position and another when said cam-heads of the picker-stick levers are in position, and thus the two picks would interfere. This operation of alternate picks by the regular iiy shuttle and the swivel shuttles is kept up as long as swivel Weaving is to be performed. AS soon as the weaving is to be changed to plain weaving the left-hand end of the lever F is raised, so as to bring the pins m m out of engagement with the spiral grooves d d of the sleeves R R', and said sleeves are locked in position as regards sliding on the shaft E by the pins n n which pass into the grooves et a. of the sleeves R R. At the same time the sleeve D is shifted in such amanner as to bring the cam D out of engagement with the arm C of the rocking shaft C. Y
Having thus described fny invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl.l The combination, with a loom frame, of a lay and a swivelshuttle beam on the same, means for-raising or lowering the swivel shuttle beam, a driving shaft in the loom frame,

the pinion engaging the loose cog-wheel having teeth on half its circumference only, a sleeve connected with the loose cog-wheel, a cam sleeve mounted upon the sleeve connected with the loose cog-wheel, means for automatically shifting said cam sleeve, and a swivel shuttle rack reciprocating device opere ated from said cam sleeve, substantially as` set forth.
