FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 495,955, dated April 25, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NAZAIRE BOUVIER, a citizen of Canada, residing at Montreal, in the district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented a new and useful Fire-Escape Apparatus, (for which I have obtained a patent in Canada, No.41,636, bearing date January 16, 1893,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a fire escape apparatus whose object is to operate a rapid and safe escape' The figure attached to this specification is an elevation of my apparatus as it must be during its use and work.

My fire escape apparatus is composed of a bagA of whatever length it is of square, round or rectangularsection or other; it is opened at both ends and attached by one of its extremities to a frame made of two long bars 13, B and the two medium bars 0, O. This bag A may be made of strong linen or any other convenient cloth. At every two feet at the ex terior there is a kind of strangulation of the bag made bya circle of rope D fixed all around. These ropes D can be hidden by a cloth E covering them to give to the bag a better appearance. The advantage of this strangulation of the bag by the ropes D will be seen further. The lower end of the bag A has a spring F of whose use I will speak below. The frame made of bars B, B and bars 0, O can be cast iron, iron or any other metal. It is provided with hooks G, G and a cable H which runs into the bag A in all its length and it comes out by the lower opening I.
My invention being thus described, the single thing for me now is to give an explanation of its working at the instant of a fire.
K designates the wall of the building and L the window. I take in hand the whole apparatus, and heave the bag A outside through the window L and fix the frame on the interior of the wall K and fix the hooks G, Gabove so that the frame can be held in a vertical plane. The ends of the bars B, B are bent back a little so that I can fix them in the wallK more solidly. The half circle M of iron situated at a few feet from the frame is used to render easier the entering into the bag A by opening its walls. The apparatus being thus placed the unfortunates enter the bag A by the upper opening N, take hold in an easy manner the cable H and let themselves go down by reason of their weight. descent becomes too rapid they stop it easily by pressing more firmly the cable H, but specially in extending the elbows, the knees and the feet that are stopped in the strings D. Having arrived in the curving part of the bag A, they are stopped, but the weight of the person who comes down extends the spring F so that he is deposited softly on the ground 0. The curving part of the bag A has its principal advantage in case some disabled unfortunate or some children should let themselves go down without stopping the rapidity of their descent. In suchcase the curving part of the bag A strongly reduces the rapidity so that the departure shall be easy.
Now What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The frame formed by the bars B B and O 0, provided with the cable H and hooks G G, substantially as described.
2. The bag A provided with the half circle M, the strings D and the spring F, all substantially as described and for the purposes specified.
