BLOCK-SETTING RACK FOR SANDPAPERING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 495,758, dated April 18, 1893. Application filed February 21 1893. Serial No. 463,237. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. Runes, a
' citizen of the United States of America, residin g at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Block-Setting Rack for Sandpapering-Maphines, of which the following is a specificaion.
This invention relates to an auxiliary device intended for use in connection with a sandpapering machine, which is made the subject of an application forLetters Patent of the United States, filed by me upon the 21st day of February, A. D. 1893, Serial No. 463,238. In said application mechanism is described adapted to carry a series of blocks covered with sandpaper back and forth over molding fed continuously through a machine. The different blocks making up the series are fitted to different pieces of molding or to different portions of one piece, and as the said different pieces or portions are liable to vary in thickness, these blocks are vertically ad j ustable to adapt them to all thicknesses. The sandpaper upon the blocks must be removed from time to time, and it is the purpose of the device which forms the subject of this application to enable the operator by the use of duplicate blocks, if necessary, to adjust the blocks out of the machine and thus materially lessen the time lostin changing blocks or fitting the machine for a new molding.
The device is illustrated by means of three figures of which,
Figure 1 is a plan of the block-setting rack; Fig.2 an end elevation; and Fig. 3 a side elevation partly in section, the right hand side of the latter figure being-in elevation" and the left hand partly in section taken in line 3-3, of Fig. 2. Said last figure also shows a block and block-holder in position upon the rack illustrating the method of adjusting the same for quick insertion in a sandpapering ma chine.
This device consists of a base, A, provided at each end with a series of holes, a, and having guiding bars, a, secured by means of screws, a fitting in the holes, a, which are tapped to receive them. Rising from the corners of the base, A, are four upright posts, a", slotted longitudinally and upon these posts are carried adjustable bars, a, clamped in position by means of bolts, a and thumb nuts, a.
In my sandpapering machine, described in the application above referred to, the sandpapering blocks are carried by block-holders which contain means for the vertical adjustment of the blocks, and which are carried upon cross rods, themselves supported upon the side pieces of a rectangular box, or frame, carried back and forth by mechanism fully described in said application.
In Fig. 3 ablock is shown at F, resting upon a piece of molding, Y. A block-holder is shown at E, supported upon a cross rod, 6, carried by clamps, e upon the adjustable bars, a". In use, these adjustable bars are clamped at the same height from the base, A, that the side pieces of the frame in the sandpapering machine happen to be, and the bars a, upon the base are adjusted to occupy the same positions as the guides upon the bed of the sandpapering machine. The block-holders with their supporting devices are then placed upon the adjustable bars, a, and adjusted both vertically and laterally to the proper positions, after which they may be placed in the sandpapering machine ready for use in a few minutes. This not only avoids stopping the machine during all the time consumed by the adjustment, but the simple and compact construction of this device enables the operator to get at the blockholders more conveniently and to accomplish the adjustment in much less time than if it were necessary to place the blocks in the machine for this purpose.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A block-setting rack for sandpapering machines, consisting of a suitable base provided with guides adjustable thereon and uprights carrying horizontal bars adjustable thereupon and provided with means for clampin gthem in any desired position; substantially as described.
2. A block-setting rack for sandpapering machines comprising the flat base, .A, having the guide bars, a, adj ustably secured thereto,
