CANE-STRIPPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,743, dated April 4, 1893.

Be it known that I, GEORGE Hin'rr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cane-Strippers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had :therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to an improved Form of stripping cane.

The object of the invention is, to employ such peculiar construction in a cane stripping machine, whereby the cane may be readily stri pped of leaves, and other projections, in a thorough etcient and satisfactory manner; furthermore after the operation of stripping has been completed, the provision of suitable meehanism,whereby the cane may be collected and tied in bundles of any different size.

With these objects in view, the invention consists in a cane stripping machine, comprising a suitable frame work, having double length central standards, between which a number of wires are horizontally stretched, and crossing the horizontal wires at right angles thereto, a series of vertical wires are secured, forming, in combination with the first named series, a number ot approximately square openings, through which the cane is adapted to be passed in stripping the same. In arranging these wires it will be understood that various methods may be adopted, to wit: Each wire may be independently adjustable, or each series may be separately adjustable and formed of a single length of wire; or the entire wiring of the frame may be from asingle length; furthermore, in combination with theframe having vertical and horizontal Wires secured thereon, forming square openings, of suitably disposed brace rods, provided with screwthreaded end portions and adjusting nuts arranged thereon, whereby said wires may be readily and conveniently tensioned.

Furthermore, iinally the invention consists in various novel details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings -forming a part of this specification, wherein like letters or" reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, inv which,

"In these drawings: A, indicates the frame work, comprising the parallel beams et, the standard d, a2, the latter being mounted on wheels a3, and suitably braced, the double length standards, d4, arranged centrally of said frame-work, and the curved arms d5, forming cradles for holding the cane. These double length standards c4, are provided with middle and top beams a6, ci, brace rods as, the latter having the tension nuts a, c, and horizontally and vertically of the space inclosed by these timbers c4, a6, c7, stout wiresare stretched, forming approximately, square openings through which the cane is adapted to be passed in stripping the same, (as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4.) As the cane is passed through the stripper, it is collected in a cradle formed by the curved supporting arms d5, until an amount suiiicient to form a bundle has been stripped, when the bundle forming device hereinafter to be described, is operated by the pressure of the foot lever. This bundling device, comprises a number of S-shaped arms B, four being here shown, arranged in pairs and pivoted as at h, to the curved arms c5. The connecting links or toggles b2, are pivotally secured to the lower ends of said S-shaped arms and serve to connect the latter with the lateral projecting studs c, of a pivoted foot-pedal C, whereby as power is applied to said pedal, motion willbe transmitted to said S-shaped arms, edecting a collection of the cane contained in thecradle, and at the same time forming it into a bundle until it is securely tied, by twine from the drum D, when it is ready for shipment.

The operation of the apparatus Will be readily understood from the foregoing description.

Having fully described my invention, what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a combined cane stripping and bundling apparatus, the frame work A, as described, the double length standards a4, centrally disposed and provided with a series of o ings through which the cane is adapted t0 pass in stripping the same, and the adjustable brace rods, and tension nuts substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
