BASKET FOR GATHERING FRUIT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 494,666, dated April 4, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1,0HARLES S. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Baskets for Gathering Fruit, of which the following is a specification.

The material of my basket is the thin wood produced by shaving from a log, as long practiced for the sides of the rectangular boxes in which oranges are packed for market, peculiarly formed hoops and Well annealed nails and plane board. I steam the thin wood, bend the portion which forms the main body of the basket and secure the parts together while in the steamed condition. One of the upright faces of the basket is plane, adapting it to match smoothly against the side of the person carrying it. The remaining upright part is a single piece of similar material, bent around. The horizontal section of the basket is in the form of the letter D, with the angles open. When, as is usually the case in practice, a large number of my baskets are formed rapidly and piled one upon another, they without further care maintain their damp condition for a considerable period, during which the material becomes fully set, and the structnres on finally cooling and drying constitute strong and efficient baskets, which can be produced at a low price.

The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and represent what I consider the best means of carrying out the invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. showing a portion on a larger scale.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures where they appear.

A is a plane piece of board, sawed or otherwise Wrought in the shape of a capital D to serve as a bottom.

Bis a plane upright side of thin shaved wood and D a much wider piece of the same material, of equal height, steamed and bent as shown. The vertical joints between the parts B and D are left open.

My baskets are intended for gathering oranges and other fruits, of considerable size. In the cases where a basket shall be allowed Fig. 3 is a vertical section to stand in a loaded condition many hours or days, it is of advantage to have the structure liberally ventilated by these open joints.

E, F and G are similar hoops of approxi mately D.-forms, straight in the portions which match upon B,bent sharply at the points which correspond with the junctions of the parts B and D, and curved to correspond to the bend of the part D in the remainder. One, E, is thick, and is previously rabbeted on its lower side by sawing or analogous treatment before it is bent. This is applied upon the upper edges receiving the parts B and D in the rabbet. Another hoop, F, is thinner and not rabbeted. It is applied around the bottom of the structure, and the third, G, is fitted around at the mid-height. Nails H are driven through the lower hoop F into the bottom A, and through the straps E and G and the upright material B and D against a hard surface temporarily held in place and thereby clinched. Two notches b, b, formed in the plane upright B at the top serve to receive a strap of leather or other flexible material, not shown, which takes hold of the upper loop E. The user slips the strap over his head and allows it to rest on one shoulder while the basket applies with its flat face against his opposite side. The hoop F at the mid-height may be omitted in some cases.

My invention is especially serviceable in gathering oranges by avoiding the liability of the delicate fruit to be jammed or to be pricked by the thorns of the orange tree which are liable to puncture bags and baskets ordinarily used.

I claim as my invention A fruit basket, having a curved upright D of a wood sheet bent, another upright B of such wood sheet plane, the said sheets being separated by Widely open joints extending up and down along two lines and held together and to a suitable bottom A by approximately D-shaped hoops, all substantially as herein specified.
