To a/ZZ whom it may concerma Be it known that LJoHN HENRY RING,a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Police-Patrol Systems; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in police patrol systems.

The object of the inventionis to securethe prisoner at a station until the arrival of the patrol wagon and leave the officer free to preserve order or attend to other matters which may require attention. l

A further purpose of the invention is to provide a signal box with distinct compartments and equipping the same with necessary appliances such as chains, and handcuffs to secure the prisoner. These attachments will form a part of the signal box to be constructed, or may be a separate structure and adapted to be applied tothe signal boxes now in use.

The improvement may be located at convenient points on the beat controlled by an officer so that in the event of an arrest the prisoner may be secured at one of these sta-v tions until the o iicer goes to the patrol box and summons the patrol wagon.

The improvement further consists of the novel features and the peculiar construction and combination of the parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which;

It will be understood that the invention may be applied to a tire alarm box or to any box which is suitably equipped with instrumentalities to convey messages to a central station or to any desired point so that help may be summoned when required. Obviously, signal boxes of special construction may be provided and located at convenient places so that an offender may be secured while the officer goes to a distance point to call for assistance.

The essence of the invention is to combine with a signal box compartments for receiving the means whereby a prisoner is secured until the arrival of assistance. In the signal boxes of special construction these compartments will form an essential part of the box, but in boxes now in use, the compartments will be separate'structures and secured to said signal boxes in any desired manner.

In Fig. l the signal box is of special construction and is provided at its lower end with compartments A and B which are of proper dimensions to receive the devices for securing one or more prisoners. These devices consist of a chain E and handcuifs F, the chain being rmly secured to a portion of the signal box. The lo'wer wall of the compartments is provided with notchesa through which the chains E extend thereby enabling the door C to be closed after a prisoner is made secure. The upper portion of the signal box is adapted to receive the signal apparatus which is of ordinary construction and arrangement, and which formsno part of the present invention. vThe door O is adapted to close the upper compartmentD and the lower compartments A and Bof the signal box, and is provided with ahook G which is constructed to receive and form means of attachment for the shackles H in the event of the prisoner being handcuifed before he reaches the station at which the signal box is located.

Fig. 2 shows a box I of ordinary construction and in service. In this case the invention is separate and distinct from the box and is attached thereto in any desired manner. The attachment is provided with lugs h b which are conformed to the lower side of the box I and which receive the fastening devices and by means of said attachments is secured to the said signal box. The compartments A and B and the chain E and the handcuft F', are substantially the same as the corresponding parts shown in Fig. 1. A door J is provided for each compartment and is held in a closed position by a suitable lock,

as the catch K and the recess or opening L. If preferred, a single door may be provided for the two compartments, but it is preferred to have two doors, one for each compartment.

Vhen the signal box is not required for service the handcuifs and chains will be placed in the respective compartments pro vided for their reception. In the event of an arrest being made the prisoner is marched to the nearest signal box and secured by means of one of the chains and handcuffed until assistance arrives. .By this improved system an oliicer can make two or more arrests within comparatively short time and secure each of the prisoners until help is obtained.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a police patrol system, a signal box having compartments, and having each com partment provided with a chain and handcufl", said chain being firmly attached to the signal box, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a police patrol system, a signal box having separate compartments, and having notches a in the edge of vthe lower wall of said compartment, and having a chain and handouif which is adapted to be stored in said com partments, substantially as described for the purpose set forth.

8. In a police patrol system, the combination with a signal box, of an attachment adapted to be firmlysecnred to said box, and having compartments which are adapted to be closed, and a chain and handcuff foreach compartment, substantially as described for the purpose specified.
