Description

UNITED STATES JACOB SCHNEIDER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN ARTIFICIAL LEGS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent N0. 49,44 3, dated August 15, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB SCHNEIDER, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State'ot Ohio, have invented a new and useful Artificial Leg 5 and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reterence beinghad to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification.
This improvement relates to the class of cases Where the amputation has been performed below the knee, so as to leave that joint an l the upper portion ot' the limb intact, and is intended to provide a sim ple and effective limb of moderate cost and light weight.
A and B are sheaths of' leather for the thigh and stump respectively. The said sheaths are secured to the limb of the wearer by means of laces C or`olher` suitable fastenings.
D D are rods of iron or stl-el iirmly secured to the sheath A, and terminating oppositethe knee of the wearenwith hinges or pivotsE E', by which they are articulated to similar rods, F F', which are firmly attachedto the sheath B on opposite sides thereof', and are pivoted at their lower extremities to a foot, G, which may be of Wood, and be covered with leather and padded or cushioned along its sole.
The rods F F swell outward a little above lthe foot to admit the ankle it' necessary, and to impart a natural appearance to the limb,
and to enable it to lit snugly Within an ordively attached to the heel and instep of the piece G, and united by their upper ends to the back and front of the sheath B. Buckles J may enable the said straps to be brought to such relative tension as to hold the foot to its flat or naturally resting position when `not in active use, yet lo permit of such changes of angle with respect to the leg as occur in walking, sitting, Snc.
I claim herein as Lew and of my invention- The arrangement of the sheaths A and B and foot G, the whole being connected together by articulated rods l) E F D E I1", while elastic straps H and l connect to` the sheath B, the heel, and the instep ot' the foot, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
JACOB SCHNEIDER. Witnesses:
