SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,890, dated March 7, 1893.

Be it known that 1, ANDREW KRIEGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saws, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to that class of holders for inserted saw teeth which are provided with slots whereby the portion which bears against the socket of the saw blade, and the portion terminating in the exposed edge are divided, and the holder thus given an inherent spring force,-and it consists in such a construction of said 'slot or slots as keeps them free from becoming filled up by sawdust, or particles from the wood, or other substances with which the saw comes in contact. Heretofore, such slots have, in the course of a short time, become so solidly filled, that the purpose thereof has been defeated, while the substance has been required to be removed before another tooth could be inserted. The result has been that little or no advantage has been gained from the employment of the slots, and the holder has remained substantially as stiff as when made in the old-fash' ioned solid form. To obviate this I have cut away the metal at the sides of the holder, back from the slot, at a steep angle, leaving the metal at the center of the slot with a sharp edge, from which it gradually tapers to the sides.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fragment of a saw of the inserted tooth pattern, in which the holder is constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 a transverse sectional view, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows from the dotted line 2 2 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a central sectional view on the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 2.

In said drawings the portion marked A represents the fragment of the saw; B the cutting tooth, and O the holder.

My present invention relates wholly to the character of the slot 0 in the holder 0. As shown most plainly in Fig. 2,the metal at the bottom of this slot comes to a sharp edge in the center. This is also illustrated by the shading in Fig. 1, and by the dotted lines in Fig. 3. Where the slot is constructed in this form, it will be impossible for anything to pack into it so tightly as not to easily fall out, either of itself, or under the impulse of the motion of the saw. The slot is therefore always free, and the springy character of the holder is preserved, while no time is lost when it is desired to remove the teeth and insert new ones, as would be necessary with the slot filled, as it does in the old form. The tapering formation is shown on one side of the slot only, but it may of course be made on both sides if desired.

Having thus fully described my said invenion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A holder for insertible saw teeth having a slot extending longitudinally thereof the wall whereof is beveled or inclined, whereby obstructions are prevented from accumulating, or are easily discharged when they do accumulate, substantially as set forth.

2. In a holder for insertible saw teeth, a slot partially dividing the holder, the side wall whereof is formed with an edge at a central point from which the metal is gradually beveled back to the sides of the holder, substantially as set forth.

Atlcins d2; Company, of sameplace, said E. G. Atkins & Company being assignee of the entire interest in said invention as shown by the assignments of record in this Office; and that said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that. the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Oflice. I
