Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALOIS OPHOVEN, OF PADERBORN, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES HENRY SAMUEL SCHULTZ, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
PROCESS OF MAKING COLORED PICTURES ON TEXTILE FABRICS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,362, dated February 21, 1893. Application filed April 7, 1892- Serial No. 431,387. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALOIS OPHOVEN, a citizen of Germany, residing at Paderborn, in the Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Process of Making Colored Pictures on Textile Fabrics; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled IO in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Heretofore pictures have been colored on the face by means of oil, water or dry colors, but never has such coloring been done to pic- 5 tures on textile fabrics from theirreverse side, as in my process, which I call:A process of producing colored pictures on textile fabrics, and which is carried into effect as follows:
On the reverse side or back of a piece of textile fabric on the face of which a picture has been made, either by photography or printing, pastel or other suitable coloring material, corresponding to the various designs on the face of the picture, is applied and rubbed 2 5 into the fabric. While the colors are being rubbed against the protruding threads of the web, the finest atoms penetrate into the tissue, whereas the coarser particles, remaining more on the outside, appear in a more pleas- 3o ing manner.
WVith this process the pastel colors, almost unfading, but extremely sensitive to the touch, lie thoroughly protected in the texture.
The effect of the picture is considerably heightened by putting it upon a white back- 3 5 ground or base, which is reflected through the fabric. By other colors, similar results are obtained. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The process of making colored pictures on textile fabrics, consisting in first photographing or printing a picture on a piece of textile fabric, next applying pastel or other suitable colors corresponding to the designs on the reverse side of the fabric and rubbing the same into the said fabric, and then mounting it upon a reflecting background or base substantially as described.
2. A picture formed on textile fabric having its colors rubbed in on the reverse side, and a reflecting background or base applied thereto, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
A. OPHOVEN.
