To all whom tt may concern:
Beitknowu that I, JAMES Bonson, of Yates -Y City, in the county ot' `Knox and State of llli nois,.have invented a; new and Improved Paddle-Viheel; and I do hereby dechire that the following isa. full, clear, and exact description thereof, .which ivill enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ofthisspecitication, in which- Figure 1 is aside sectional view ot' my inf vention, `taken in the lineare,- EigxZgVFig. 2, an endl-'or edge view of thi. saniey'hfigftan enlarged section of nportiohjiot' onejot' the buckets, taken in the line y y,ig. 1.
iindirate paddle-wheel'otthnt class which-ere provided with feathering buckets; and it, consists in a novel and improved means tori operntingthe buckets, and in lenjiniproved consti-notion and arrnn gement of certain" parts peinte-ining thereto, whereby several adrautges are obtained l over other'paddle-wheelsoi the saule class, as
A represents the shaft of the wheel, and B. the arms ot' the same, there being four arms represented at each side of the wheel; but more may be used, if necessary. AC represents the buckets, which are hung ou journals a at the ends ot` thegarms B, ,the journals Vbeing allowed -to turnfreely in their hearings. At one end of each bucket U there are two guidefrods, D D, one being in a. plane or line in front of the bucket and the other behind it. These guide-rods passthrough ovall end'pieces, E, which' 'have checks b b at their inner side, between which checks the ends ot' the buckets Vare j-ttcd, and secured bybolts c, which pees through bracesd and through the journals a, which Vpass centrallyinto Ythe ends ot' the buckets. (See Figs. 2 and f 3 The braces d, at the ends of the buckets where the guiderods D are attached, are secured to the ch self-pieces by the rotisD, which pass through the creces and have nuts con their inner ends. By this :node of Vconstruction a strong substantiai bu'cket'is obtained", with its journals and;-

n'early'a circle, it having a. short-crook or turn,
es shownatj', and its lower part, as shownet g g g, is a portion of rather a larger circle than the other parts. Thel other Way, E', is placed above the lwer part of E, and corresponds to its curvature, as clearly shown in Fig. l. Underneath E there is c wey, E", which is ec centric with'E,formiug with the latter what may be termed n curved V. Underneath Ef' therevis n way, E", which is concentric with E. These several ways are not attached separately to the sident the vessel or wheelhouse, but are secured to n frhling', AJ, which is secured to the former, so that by detaching 'said framing all of the wai-ys may be removed 'at once und replaced Without any difficulty. As the Wheel rotates the guide-rods D pass through the spaces h it between the ways E Riuniti-ELLEN',canse the buckets toassunie e v ertic'al position as they leave the Water, thereby :wending the lift attending the or# dinary fixed buckets, and the buckets areturued' a quarter-revolution, so as to be in the same plane with thearlns B, by means of the crook or turnf. rhis turning or-movement ofthe buckets is necessary in order that they may have, a proper position in entering the water. The upperpart of wey E retains them in this position. The buckets are turned from a ra,- dial position, relntively with the sha-ft A. to lrrerticnl position ns they pass under the shaft A, and rise at its rear, as will be neen by referring to Fig. l.
By this simple .arrnngement it will be seen that the'buckets may be feathered with but little friction, and in case the ways should become worn, broken, or require repairs at any time they may be readily detached and repaired and new ones substituted. without taking a vessel into dock or having vit hauled out ofthe water.
' I claiin as new` unt ters Patent- 1. A plurality of cani-guides for feathering the buckets, as herein specified.
