Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AARON H. BUGHER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARE-BOXES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,078, dated August 1, 1865.
i by declare the following to bea full, clear, and
exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification. i
My invention relates to a system of checks operated jointly by the collector and the person paying the fare, toll fee, or other money, whereby a precise register or record, beyond the control of the collector, is preserved of each and every payment.
Figure l is a perspective view of a box or case embodying the principal features of my `invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ot' a porti`n of said box.
A is a box or case, having a lid, B, whose lock C is in the exclusive custody ofthe superintendent, cashier, proprietor, or whoever may for the time being have control, charge, or ownership of the money.
D is a slot or aperture in the top of the box A, through which checks or counters bearing on their faces the amounts paid in each case are dropped by the passenger or other person paying the money. Vhere checks of several denominations are employed, as many separate compartments and appropriate apertures may be provided in the box;
The box may have a concavity or depression, E, on its rear side to fit the arm of the user, and may be provided with straps FF', which, being linked or otherwise attached to the upper rear angle of the box, may pass through staples G G near the lower rear angle, and engage by eyes H over studs or buttons Iprojecting from the bottom of the box.
The straps F F' may be of india-rubber and the eyes Hof metal, while the buttons may consist ot' a series, so as to enable the wearer to give the strap any desired tension.
An additional safeguard may be afforded by providing a shutter or escutclieon, J, to the keyhole K, which escutcheon, when closed, passes under a curb, L, coincident with whose center the said escutcheon is provided with a flaringstud or button, M. The key-hole being closed 'by the escutcheon, a wax seal may be run and stamped into the space within the curb, and will he securely held in place by the button M. A still further safeguard may consistin fixing athwart the aperture D, on its under side, a yielding and resilient tongue, N, which, being momentarily deiiected by the passage into the box ot a counter, will return with aspring and strike a bell, O, so as to enable the collector, as well as the payer, and even any bystander, to know Whether a counter has actually cntered the box.
'Ihe box may be composed ot' tin, wood, gutta-percha, leather, or other suitable material, and may be adapted for use with coin or other money instead of counters.
The straps F F may be replaced by a hook to engage in a suitable belt secured around the collectors waist, or by rings for the insertion of a sling or shoulder-strap; or the box may be simply adapted for counter use or attachment to a wall.
I claim herein as new and of'myinvention- The lchecking and registering device composed ofthe slot D, resilient tongue N, and bell O, when arranged and constructed as herein described. y
In testimony' of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
