ATENT JACOB R. SCOTT, :OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SOLE-TRIMMING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,841, dated December 27, 1892. Application filed September 8, 1892. Serial No. 445,352. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB R. SCOTT, acitizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the city and county of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sole-Trimming Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for reducing the thickness of the edge of a sole for boots or shoes or of another article of a similar nature.
The peculiar and novel construction of my machine is pointed out in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawingsin which,
Figure 1, is a front view. Fig. 2, is a side elevation looking in the direction of arrow 1 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a horizontal section in the plane a; 00 Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a perspective view of the bracket which carries the knife and the gage. Fig. 5, is a perspective View of the arm which carries said bracket.
In the drawings the letter A designates a frame or standard which forms the bearings for a shaft B and on which is firmly secured the arm D and to this arm is adjustably secured the bracket E which carries the knife F and the side gage G. Both the knife and the side gage are secured to the bracket by set screws which may pass through slots in the bracket to facilitate the operation of adjustment.
On the shaft B is mounted the edge gage H which is made in the form of a small circular drum with a smooth surface and the shaft B is exposed to the action of a spring a, which has a tendency to hold the front face of the edge gage H in close proximity to the knife and the side gage but which permits said shaft to recede in case any portion of the leather or any other obstruction should find its way between the front face of the edge gage and the inner faces of the knife and of the side gage.
I is the feed roller which is firmly mounted upon a Vertical shaft or arbor J mounted in a slide K which is guided in boxes LM secured to the standard A. The boxL is provided with a sloth through which extends a pin 0 which is firmly secured in the slide K and engages the vertical arm 01 of a bell crank lever d e, the horizontal arm e of which connects by a rod f with a treadle T. The box M is provided with a slot g through which extends a pin it which is firmly secured in the slide K and in the box M is secured a set screw 1 which is in the path of the pin it so that the throw of the slide K can be adjusted. The treadle T is exposed to the action of a spring 8 the tension of which can be adjusted by a nut and when the treadle is permitted to follow the action of this spring, the slide K is carried forward, until the pin it strikes the set screw a. When the treadle is depressed, the slide is moved backward so as to increase the distance between the feed roller I and the knife F. The vertical arbor J is' geared with a horizontal shaft N'which has its bearings in the standard Aand which is geared with the main shaft B by cog Wheels Z on as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 so that when the shaft B is set in motion, such motion will be transmitted to the feed roller I. For the purpose of gearing the arbor J with the shaft N, I use a worm wheel 11 and worm screw 0 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 so that the movement of the slide K will not disturb the action of the gearing.
From the front end of the slide K extends an arm p which carries a guard q (Figs. 1 and 3) to prevent the material to be trimmed from catching between the edge gage H and the feed roller I. The side gage Gis provided at its bottom end with a lip 4" (Figs. 3 and 4) which serves to keep the point of the knife out of contact with the material to be trimmed so that if my machine is used for trimming soles which are attached to the uppers of boots or shoes, the knife is prevented from injuring the upper. The feed roller I is made in the form of an inverted truncated cone, the bevel of which determines the quantity of the material which is cutoff by the knife. The cutting edge of the knife is situated opposite the center of the feed roller.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A sole trimming machine, consisting of the following elements, to wit: the upper rotary shaft B havingan attached, circulargage H, the periphery of which bears against the edge of the sole to be trimmed, the rotary shaft J arranged approximately at right angles to the upper shaft and having the attached, feed roller I provided with a beveled face which bears against the side of the sole, and a stationary side gage Gand a stationary knife F both located in frontof and in juxtaposition to the circular gage, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the rotary edge gage H mounted on the shaft B and with the stationary side gage G and the stationary knife Fof the spring actuated slide K, the arbor J carried by the slide and arranged approximately at right angles to said gage carrying shaft, the feed roller I mounted on this arbor, the shaft N geared with the arbor J and with the shaft B the treadle T and suitable connections between the treadle and the slide, substantially as described.
3. The combination with the rotary edge gage I-I mounted on the shaft B and with the stationary side gage G and the stationary knife F of the springactuated slide K, the arbor J carried by the slide and arranged approximately at right angles to the gage carrying shaft, the feed roller I and the Worm Wheel n mounted on this arbor, the shaft N, the Worm screw 0 mounted on this shaft and gearing into the Worm wheel at, the treadle T and suitable connections between the treadle and the slide, substantially as described.
at. The combination with the rotary edge gage H mounted on the shaft B and With the side gage G and the knife F of the spring actuated slide K, means for adjusting the throw of and arranged approximately at right angles to the gage carrying shaft, the arbor J carried by the slide, the feed roller I mounted on this arbor, the shaft N geared with the arbor J and With the shaft B, the treadle T and suitable connections between the treadle and the slide, substantially as described 5. The combination with the rotary edge gage H mounted on the shaft B and with the stationary side gage G and stationary knife F of the slide K, the arbor J carried by the slide, and arranged approximately at right angles to the gage carrying shaft, the feed roller I mounted on the arbor, the guard (1 carried by said slide, the shaft N geared with the arbor J and With the shaft B and means for actuating the slide, substantially as described.
6. The combination with the rotary edge gage H and the bevel faced rotary feed roller I mounted respectively on independent shafts which are arranged approximately at right angles to each other, of the stationary knife F, the stationary side gage G and the lip 1 formed on said side gage, substantiallyas described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
