JACQUARD-CARD WIRE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,418, dated December 20, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that We, ALFRED BENTLEY and THOMAS W. BENTLEY, of Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved J acquard- Oard Wire, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a now and improved Jacquard card wire arranged for convenient and secure tying between the adjacent parts to prevent endwise slipping.

The invention consists of a wire extending between adjacent cards and formed with flattened parts and tying strings engaging the said wires at the flattened parts and also the laces connecting the Jacquard cards with each other.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improvement, as applied; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional perspective view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the improvement.

The Jacquard cards A, are fastened together in the usual manner by the laces B, arranged near the ends and the middle, as is plainly illustrated in Fig. 1. Between adjacent cards A is located the wire or rod 0, projecting at its ends 0' asuitable distance beyond the ends of the cards. On each of the wires or rods 0 are formed flattened parts D, adjacent to which are arranged the tying strings E, E for securing the rods in place between the cards, the said tying strings also engaging the laces B, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawings.

As shown in Fig. 1, flattened parts are formed near the end lacesB and two flattened parts D are located on opposite sides of the middle B, the tying string E, for the middle lace B passing around the wire between the two flattened parts. The end flattened parts D are arranged on the inside of the end lace B, so thatwhen the wire is in place and fastened to the laces by the tying strings E, an endwise motion is completely prevented, as the flattened parts D cannot pass through the tying loops of the strings E and E.

In tying the wire 0 in place, each string E is first passed around the lace B on the part extending between the adjacent cards, and then the ends of the string are passed several times over and around the wire 0 after which the ends of the strings are tied by forming a knot preferably a double knot, to prevent unfastening of the ends of the strings.

It will be seen that by this device a lateral shifting of the wire 0 is prevented, so that the ends 0 always project like distances from the ends of the cards for suspending the latter in the usual way.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

The combination with Jacquard cards and laces for connecting the same, of a wire extending between the adjacent cards and form ed with flattening parts, and tying strings engaging the said wires at the flattened parts, the said tying strings also engaging the said laces, substantially as shown and described.
