LISTED-CORN CULTIVATOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,345, dated December 20, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ABRAHAM WooLsToN- CROFT, a citizen of the United States, residing at (Jentralia, in the county of Nemaha and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Listed-Corn Cultivator, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in cultivators designed to hillup ground adjacent to such plants as potatoes, corn, &o.,the object of my improvement being to provide means whereby the earth may be taken from the furrows and conveyed to the hills, and at the same time that weeds, grass, &FC., may be cut and removed.

A further object of my invention is to provide simple and effective means whereby one row may be billed simultaneously.

A further object of my invention is to provide means in connection with the cultivator whereby the depth at which the cutters or hillers operation is controlled or governed by the hills upon opposite sides.

Further objects of my invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed outin the appended claim.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View of a cultivator embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the cultivator reversed for removal from the field.

A A represent the rearwardly-divergent mold-boards, connected at their upper edges by the horizontal plat-form B which is supported thereupon, the front ends of said moldboa-rds being separated a sufficient distance to allow the latter to pass upon opposite sides of an intermediate hill. Secured to the outer sides of the mold-boards are the horizontal cutters or knives G, which are arranged substantially in a plane-with the lower edges of the mold-board and are provided at their inner edges with vertical flanges D, which are secured to the mold-boards. To the inner sides of the mold-boards are secured the rearwardly-convergent and curved billing-fingers E, the lower rear ends of which pass upon opposite sides of the centralorintermediate hill and are adapted to draw the earth'upon the same from opposite sides. Attached to the front ends of the mold-boards at their upper edges, is a horizontal transverse guide F,consisting of the transverse plate G, the upwardly and forwardly inclined plate H, to which are secured the ends of the draft-cl1ain I, and the runners K, secured to the upper side of said horizontal plates and extending longitudinally of the cultivator.

In operation, the depth to which the moldboards and cutters or knives are carried is governed by the height of the ridges which are being operated upon,the transverse guides resting lightly upon the tops of said ridges and thus guiding the machine. The tendency of the draft upon the inclined plate at the front end is to draw the front ends of the mold-boards downwardly and prevent them from running out of the ground. The knives or cutters remove the grass and weeds from the surface of the furrows, thus clearing the surface of the ground between the hills, and the inclination of the machine when. in operation causes the earth to be removed from the centers of the furrows and carried to the tops of the hills.

hen it is desired to remove the cultivator from the field it is reversed and caused to ride upon the above-described runners.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

In a cultivator,the combination with divergent mold-boards A carrying cutters C and fingers E, and connected by the horizontal platform B of the transverse laterally-projecting guide F, secured horizontally to the platform B at its front end and provided with the front inclined plate H, the draftchain attached to the plate H, and the parallel inverted runners K K secured to the upper surface of the guard F and terminating at the plate H, all substantially as specified.
