CARPET-CLEANING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,323, dated December 20, 1892.
Application filed May 17, 1892. Serial No. 433,274- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALICE A. PYLE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in CarpetOleaning Apparatuses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
, My invention relates to an improvement in carpet-cleaning apparatuses; and it consistsin certain details of construction and combination of parts which will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
The drawing is a perspective view of my invention, with a portion of the machine casing and dust-conduit broken away and the doors of the dust-receptacle open.
In the drawing, A is an ordinary rotary tumbling carpet-cleaning machine, mounted in any suitable framework, as B, one end only of which is shown.
C is a casing surrounding the machine, provided with a door 1, preferably double, for the admission of the operator for the purpose of placing the carpet in the machine and removing it therefrom. The door is cut away at its bottom, as shown, in order to form an air-inlet 2, for apurpose hereinafter described. Through one end of this casing projects power-shaft 3 of the machine A, carrying a pulley 4, driven by a belt 5 from a pulley 6 on a line-shaft D.
E is a dust-conduit, of sheet metal or other suitable material, one end of which opens into the casing O at or near its top and opposite the air-inlet 2. The other end of the dust conduit is bent downward and opens into the top of a closed dustreceptacle F, the latter.
being provided with a ventilator G, whose upper end opens into the outside air, for the purpose of relieving the dust-receptacle of any undue air-pressure. The receptacle is provided with, preferably, a double door 7, through which the accumulated dust may be removed.
In the conduit E, preferably near its connection with the machine-casing, is placed a rotary fan H, mounted in a framework 8,. and having a pulley 9, driven from a pulley 10 on the line-shaft D by a belt 11 passing through slits in the dust-conduit. 12 are doors in the cond uit, through the openings closed by which the fan may be oiled and the conduit cleaned.
I is a steam-pipe, one end of which is bent downward and opens into the top of the dustreceptacle contiguous to the lower end of the ventilator, the other end of said steam-pipe being connected with the exhaust-opening of a steam-engine (not shown) which furnishes power to the line-shaft. By the admission of exhaust-steam in a downward direction contiguous to the Ventilator, the momentum of the upward draft of air to the ventilator is checked, the particles of dust are arrested and carried downward by the condensation of the steam, and the air is permitted to escape in its normal condition.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a carpet-cleaning apparatus, a carpetcleaning machine, a casing inclosing the same and having an air-inlet near the bottom .on one side, a dust-receptacle provided with a ventilator, a dust-conduit in open communication with the interior of the casing near the top and opposite the air-inlet, and leading into the dust-receptacle, an exhaust-fan located in the conduit, means for operating the fan and machine, and an exhaust-steam pipe leading downward into the dust-receptacle and terminating at a point contiguous to the lower end of the ventilator.
