SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 488,296, dated December 20, 1892.

' and useful Machine or Press for Fruit-Packing, of which the following isa specification.

Our invention relates to fruit packing presses in which toggle-jointed levers in connection with cords and pulleys and an open platen act reciprocally as a press on the lid of boxes, so that the lid and hoops can be conveniently nailed to the box. The object being first to construct an inexpensive press, simple and quick in its application and, second, which can be easily put out of the way when not in use.

the full lines represent the same at its maxi-' mum power when in action; the two diiierent double dotted lines represent the press in two different positions, one position when the press is ready for application, and the other (elevated) position, when the press is stored out of the way. Fig. 2, is a side view of the press, and Fig. 3, is a top view on the line X X, showing the open platen with hinges to toggled-jointed levers. 7

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout both views in the drawings.

L, L are levers consisting each of two scantlings of wood or other material of suitable size, and connected in pairs with cross pieces. The one end of each pair at A, A, is secured by means of hinges to the ceiling, or to a fixed beam or joist in the packing house, the other end at B is hinged to similar lever or levers, M. The levers M, are secured at O by means of hinges to the open platen, D, which is constructed of wood or iron in such shape and size as to leave the lid edges and center cross section of box to be placed under the same, free or exposed for nailing or hooping.

In each lever M, near the toggled-hinged end at B, is inserted a small pulley, b, to carry acord; the one lever L, bears on the inside an eye, 0, in which is secured one end of pulley cord cl. This cord, cZ, passes from the eye, 0, over the two pulleys, b, b, to the outside of the lever M, and bears at its end a handle, 7c, and when drawn down to the point of sufficient pressure, is secured by the cleat F on the outside of the lever M, within convenient reach of the hand of operator.

To the outside of the levers, L, L, is secured an eye,f, to which are attached one end each of the ropes g, g, which pass over pulleys, h h, fastened to any con veuient 0utwa1dplace the ceiling or wall of packing houseand to the end of each are attached the counterpoise weights, WV W, to draw the levers akimbo.

To bring the press in operation the handle of cord d, SllOllill be pulled downward to bring the levers L, L, M, M, into as nearly a plumb position as may be required to secure proper pressure, and the cord cl, should then be secured around the cleat F, on the lever M. As soon as the cord (1, is released from the cleat F, the counterpoise weights 7, WV, acting through the ropes g, will drawihe levers at B akimbo and thus liftthe open platen D from the fruit-box E.

Having now fully described the mechanism of our press and the manner of operating it, what we claim as our invention and desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent is:

The combination in a fruit-packing press, of double toggle-jointed hinged levers L M, L M, secured by hinges at their upper ends to a fixed support, with the open platenD hinged to their lower ends; the pulleys b, b, inserted in the levers M, M, with the power cord d, passing over them, and having one end fastened to one eud'of the levers L, L, at 0; the cleat F on one of the levers M for securing the cord d; the counterpoise cords g, g, fastened to the levers L, L, and with the weights W, W, attached; the pulleys h, h, secured to a fixed support; over which cords, g, g, pass; all substantially as set forth in the foregoing specification and illustrated in the drawings;
