SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,113, dated-December 13, 1892.

Application filed July 26, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ADoLPHUs C. BUSHEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clearport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Spoke-Socket, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to spoke-sockets, and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and durable socket adapted to be applied to the rim of a wheel, either at the time the wheel is manufactured or subsequent thereto, when the tenons of the spokes have become worn,broken, or rotted away and parted from the rim.

An object of my invention\is to provide a cheap and simple integrally-cast socket adapted to be attached to the rim withoutextraneous fastening devices.

A further object of my invention is to provide a socket in which the spoke is securely held against rattling and from which it can- Further objects of my invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view ot' a spoke-socket embodying my improvement shown in connection with a rim, the latter being broken away. Fig. 2 is a central sectional View of the socket shown in connection with the rim. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the socket.

A represents a face-plate adapted to be secured to the surface of the rim and provided on its rear surface with spurs B B to engage the material of said rim. Upon the front side of said plate is arranged the socket C, on opposite sides of which and between the same and the plate are the triangular bracing-Webs D. Attached to the rear side of the faceplate and communicating with the socket is a barrel E, of smaller diameter than the socket and having a closed rear end, said barrel forming a reduced extension of the socket,

of the face-plate and within the socket. The outer surface of the reduced extension or barrel is provided with a series of laterally-projecting spurs or points G, which are adapted, when the socket is attached to a rim and the barrel is inserted in a suitable bore therein, to engage the sides of said bore and resist the withdrawal of the socket. The outer surface of the barrel is further provided with spirally-arranged grooves or channels H, into which the ber of the wood of the rim will project when the socket has been attached thereto, as shown in Fig. 2.

The end of the spoke is provided with a reduced portion L to fit in the socket, and a still further reduced portion M to fit vin the barrel, a shoulder N being arranged between the said portions to rest upon the shoulder in the socket.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A spoke-socket having a face-plate, an

outer socket, and an Ainner reduced extension l or barrel provided with exterior spurs or teeth, substantially as spec-ined.

2. A spoke-socket provided with a reduced extension or barrel having laterally-projecting spurs or teeth and spirally -arranged grooves upon its outer surface to engage the rim, substantially as specified.

3. A spoke-socket having a face-plate provided with rearwardly-projecting spurs, the socket lupon the front side of said face-plate, the bracing-webs, and the rearwardly-extending barrel or reduced portion communicating with said socket and provided at the plane of t-he face-plate with a shoulder, substantially as specified.
