HENRY DEIrz, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,664, dated December G, 1892.
Application iled March 15, 1892. Serial No. 425.072. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY DEITZ,`a citizen ful Improvements in Car-Couplers; and I do.
declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the' invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which torm a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic car-couplings; and the object of the invention is to provide a coupling adapted for use on passenger-cars and which shall be of simple and economical construction, reliable, durable, and efficient in use.
To these ends the invention consists of the features, arrangements, and combinations hereinafter described and claimed.
The improvement will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings,
in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.Y
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top or plan view of my improved coupler, the draw-head being shown in horizontal longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a side view of the draw-head. Fig. 3 is an end View of the same. Fig 4 isa side view of the coupling-head in detail. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the opposite side. Fig. Gis a top or plan View showing two drawheads in the coupled position. Fig. 7 is a perspective of a key employed to lock the coupling-head in the locked position when it is not desired to use it for coupling purposes.
Similar reference characters indicating corresponding parts or elements of the mechanism in the several views, let numeral 5 designate the draw-head provided with the longitudinal recess 6, in which is placed a coilspring 7, located between two movable plates 8 8, which-may be termed followers The rear plate 8 engages the head 9 of the rod 10, which is of ordinary construction. The outer extremity of the draw-head'is centrally recessed, as shown at 12, forming a groove for the reception of a correspondingly-shaped tongue 13, formed on the rear extremity of the coupling-head 14. The extremity of the draw-head on each side of the recess l2 is curved or arc-shaped, as shown at 15, to engage corresponding shoulders 17, formed on the engaging extremity of the coupling-head by cutting the same away horizontally. The outer extremity of the draw-head is also provided with the vertical shoulders 18 and 19, adapted to engage the corresponding vertical shoulders 20 and 21 of the coupling-head.
When the coupling-head is in the locking position, as shown in Fig. 1,the shoulders 19 and 2l engage, while there is a space 22 between shoulders 18 and 20. The couplinghead is pivoted to the draw-head by a Vertical pin 28.
The coupling-head 14 is normally held in the coupled position by a plate 24., which engages the outer follower 8 of the draw-head atone extremity and a socket or recess 25, formed in the coupling-head, at the opposite extremity. The outer extremity of the drawhead is provided with an opening to receive this plate. The cars are uncoupled by connecting any suitable mechanism with the eyebolt 27 and drawing said head outward, thus causing shoulders 18 and 2O to approach each other, plate 24 being forced backward and spring 7 compressed, while as soon as this power ceases to act the recoil of spring 7, acting on plate 2-i, returns the coupling-head to the locked position.
The outer extremity of each coupling-head is hook-shaped, as shown at 28, and provided with a curved outer face 29, whereby as the curved faces engage the coupling-heads are forced outwardly until the hooks reach the locking position, when they automatically lock, being acted upon by spring 7and plate 24. e
Instead of locating the spring within the draw-head, it may be placed in a suitable recess formed in the coupling-head, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 6. In this case one extremity of plate 24 engages a suitable recess formed in the draw-head, while the opposite extremity engages a follower in contact withthe springin the coupling-head,or springs 7 may be located in both the draw-head and coupling-head, and plate 24; so extended that each extremity engages one of these springs.
The outer extremity of each coupling-head is formed with a horizontal recess 30 and a IOO vertical aperture 3l, whereby cars provided with these heads may be coupled with those provided with the old-style draw-head by the use of the ordinary link and pin, or two of the improved coupling-heads may be connected by the old-style link and pins, if for any reason it should be desired. When the couplinghead is thus used, it must be rigid upon the draw-head, and for this purpose a key 33 (shown in Fig. 7) is employed and inserted in an aperture formed in the draw-head and passing through plate 24 into the tongue 13 of the coupling-head.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a car-coupling, the combination ot' the draw-head, the hooked coupling-head pivoted thereto, the adjacent extremities of the pivoted parts being shouldered to permit the movement required in coupling and uncoupling, and a spring-actuated plate having one extremity located in the draw-head and the other in the coupling-head, whereby the latter is normally held in the locked or coupled position, substantially as described.
2. In a car-coupling, the combination of the hollow draw-head carrying a coil-spring, the hook-shaped coupling-head pivoted thereto and provided with vertical shoulders limiting its lateral movement in both directions, and a plate engaging the coupling-head at one extremity and the coil-sprin g of the drawhead at the opposite extremity, substantially as described.
3. In a car-coupler, the combination of the hollow draw-head, the coilspring located therein, the followers engaging said spring, the hook-shaped curve-faced coupling-head pivoted to the draw-head, a plate engaging the outer follower of lthe draw-head at one eX- tremity and the coupling-head at the opposite extremity, and a locking-key entering an opening formed in the draw-head and coupling-head, whereby the coupling-head is made rigid on the draw-head, substantially as described.
4. In a car-coupler, the combination of the hollow draw-head, the coilspring located therein, the coupling-head pivoted thereto and having vertical shoulders limitingitslateral movement in both directions, and a springactuated plate having one extremity located in the draw-bar and the other in the coupling-head, the outer extremity of the coupling-head being horizontally recessed and vertically apertured for the purpose ot coupling with the ordinary link and pin, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
