SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,588, dated December 6, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, EMIL TAUSSIG and SALOMON TAUSSIG, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Disinfecting Apparatus, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved apparatus for the graduated discharge of a disinfecting fluid in places needing the application of a germicide, and has for its object to provide a device of a simple and inexpensive construction which can be automatically actuated to allow the escape of disinfecting fluid which is retained from discharge by hermetically sealing the containing-vessel above the fluid that will flow from below when the partly-established vacuum produced by such sealing is broken and air admitted to equalize pressure of the atmosphere above the fluid and at the point of discharge.
To this end our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as is hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of the device in preferred form. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2 2 in Fig.1. Figs. 3 and 4 are partly sectional and broken top views of the same parts of the device detached, showing different adjustments of said parts.
' The liquid-holding vessel A may be given any desired form, that shown being rectangular and oblong. It is preferably made of sheet metal not liable to oxidation, such as galvanized sheet-iron or tin-plate. On the side which is uppermost in use a filler-nozzle a is secured by any preferred means. As shown, it is clamped in an aperture by a nut a, that engages its inner threaded end; but it may be soldered or riveted fast to the top of the vessel, if desired. Upon the nozzle a sealing-cap a is removably secured, or a plug may be substituted for the cap and effect the same result. a
The lower side of the vesselA is perforated at a preferred point and a small dischargeheld from discharge at the nozzle 1) if the space in the vessel above the liquid is rendered airtight, as an equal bulk of air must enter to occupy the space that would be vacated by the discharged liquid.
The essential feature of our invention consists in the provision of simple and efficient means whereby the influx of atmospheric air within the vessel A may be controlled by the lowering of the water in a flush-tank of a water-closet when said closet is in use, or the depression of the closet-seat, if the latter is most convenient, whereby the escape of a graduated quantity of the disinfecting liquid from the vessel will be elfected automatically at the time it is needed, the discharge of the same being prevented when the water-closet is vacant.
The preferred means for controlling the influx of air to the vessel A in its upper portion comprises a cylindrical plug 0, having a radial flange d formed near one end, that is inserted in a mating hole in the top wall of the vessel at any point most convenient for the attachment of other mechanism, as will be explained, the flange being seated upon said wall, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. An axial perforation is formed in the body of the plug c,which extendsinwardly from the end where on the flange (1 is located, said hole 0' extending a proper distance within but not through the plug, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The plug 0 may be held on the top wall of the vessel A by a nut c or other means, which will render the connection air-tight and substantial.
Upon the true exterior of the cylindrical plug 0 a gate-ring e is fitted to slide neatly, and from one side of said ringa'lever e is projected, the ring being seated upon the flange 01 when the parts are assembled. To retain the gate-ring 6 upon the plug 0 free to rotate, a keeper-band g is secured by a setscrew g upon the plug above the ring. There is a small air-inlet hole h formed in the gatering e and cylindrical wall of the plug a, so as to afford a direct air-passage through these parts into the axial aperture 0' and thence into the vessel A, when the air-holes are made to align, as shown in Fig. 1.
To arrange the apparatus for service, the vessel A is secured upon any stable object near to a water-closet fluslttank or seat by nails or screws inserted through the ears 1', or by any other preferred means. The lever e is extended to a point convenient for attachment to the float of a flush-tank, (not shown) so arranged that the elevation of the float by the introduction of waterinto the flush-tank, all of ordinary construction, will swing the lever and cause the air-holes 71 to be thrown out of alignment, as indicated in Fig. 4, the lowering of the water in the tank gradually drawing the lever around so as to align the holes and provide a direct air-passage into vessel A, and thus cause a flow of the disinfectant at a proper instant of time while the closet is occupied.
It is evident that by ordinary means the lever 0 may be connected with a water-closet seat to be vibrated thereby, and thus oausea graduated flow of the disinfecting liquid from the vessel A, in the manner before explained.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A disinfecting apparatus consisting of the vessel A, provided with the filling-nozzle a, having a sealing-cap 0, the discharge-nozzle b, and the apertured ears, the cylindrical plug 0, secured in the vessel and having the axial aperture cand a radial aperture leading thereto, and a gated'ing e, fitted to turn on the plug and provided With an aperture adapted to register with the aperture of the plug and with a lever e, adapted to be connected with a water-closet to be operated thereby, substantially as herein shown and described;
