CHARLES H. GRIFFIN, OF LAKE CITY, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO L. KAFKA, OF SAME PLACE.
CAP-ATTACH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,562, dated December 6, 1892. Application filed February 9, 1892. Serial No. 420,862- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. GRIFFIN, of Lake City, in the county of Hinsdale and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cap-Attachers; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in crimping or securing caps on fuses, and has for its object the production of simple and efficient means whereby a miner or other person can readily attach a cap to a fuse so that the same will be securely held and be perfectly waterproof.
The invention consists, primarily, in a tool for firmly holding a cap on a fuse and having a pocket for holding a second tool for forming a groove or crease in the cap.
The invention further consists of a penknife having a circular opening extending therethrough and a pocket in one side and a blade having a tooth projecting therefrom into said opening, a crimping-tool being designed to be held in said pocket, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a pocket-knife embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side view. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the knife-blade.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a pocket-knife, and a a single blade thereof. One side a of this knife is thickened and a longitudinal opening a is formed therein, the same constituting a pocket for reception of a crimping-tool. A circular hole or opening b, extending transversely through the knife-case is formed therein near the contracted end thereof. This hole or opening is of size corresponding to the fuse and the cap to be secured thereon. In the cutting-edge of blade a, adjacent to the inner end thereof, is formed a curved groove or recess, in the center of which is a tooth b, which when the blade is closed projects into the transverse hole or opening I).
In practice a miner or other person will first open blade to and then after placing a cap on the end of a fuse insert the former into opening I), after which the blade is closed down and pressure applied by the thumb of the left hand. The tooth b will effect a depression in the cap and firmly hold the same on the fuse. The operator then forces the jaws of a crimping-tool down over the projecting portion of the cap adjacent to the inner edge thereof, and upon turning said crimping-tool in first one direction and the other forms a continuous groove or crease entirely around the cap, and thus not only binds the latter in place, but also renders it waterproof, and prevents moisture, &c., from affecting the fulminate in the outer end of the cap. By opening the blade the secured cap can be removed and the crimping-tool placed in the pocket in the side of the knife until it is desired to again use the same.
The advantages of my invention are apparent. It is well known that by the means now in use much annoyance is occasioned and valuable time consumed in trying to secure caps to fuses, whereas according to my invention every miner can always have at hand a simple and highly-efficient means for attaching the caps and protecting the latter from moisture.
Another and highly-important advantage attained by my invention is that the miner or operator always has conveniently at hand means for cutting the fuse, the blade of the knife being always used for this purpose.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The herein-described improved cap-attaoher, consisting of a pocket-knife having an opening therein and a blade provided with go a tooth projecting into said opening, substantially as set forth.
2. The herein-described improved cap-attacher, consisting of a pocket-knife having a transverse opening therethrough, a blade hava tooth projecting into said opening, and a side pocket for holding a crimping-tool for forming a groove or crease on said cap, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this too specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES H. GRIFFIN. WVitnesses:
GEO. F. FRY, H. A. AVERY.
