SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,392, dated December 6, 1892. Application filed April 13, 1891. Serial No. 388,651- (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HEINRICH KELLER, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Unterstrass, Zurich, in Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved regulator or governor for motors-forexample, steam-engines, water-wheels, and the like; and the object of my invention is to provide a regulator of this kind. which is always true and reliable and operates rapidly.
The invention consists in the combination, with a governor and means for rotating the same, of two opposite tapering drums, an endless belt passing around said drums, pivoted levers having forks for guiding and shifting said belt, and means operated from said governor for raising and lowering the belt-levers, a driven shaft, and means for rotating said driven shaft from one of said drums.
The invention also consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, which will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of my improved governor, parts being in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line C D of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line A B of Fig. 1, Fig. at is an enlarged detail view of the governor-balls and the cone pulleys or drums. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional View on the line E F of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional View on the line G H of Figs. 3 and 5, and Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail vertical longitudinal sectional view of the gearing.

The main shaft on is mounted to turn in the journal-bearings b l) and is provided at one end with a belt-pulley a, or in place of the same any suitable device may be used for retating the shaft from the motor. By means of the bevel cog-wheels c d the conical or ta pering drum or pulley g is rotated from the shaft a, and by means of the bevel cog-wheels e f the vertical governor-spindle k is rotated from said main shaft a. The tapering drum g is arranged at oneside of the governorspindle k and a like tapering drum h is arranged at the other side, said drums g h being so arranged that the drum 9 has the larger end at the bottom and the drum h the larger end at the top, so that the endless belt 11, passing around said drums, has the same tension whatever position it may have on the drums. The governor-spindle It carries a centrifugal regulator Z, of any well-known construction, provided with the weight Z". The upper ends of the governor-levers are pivoted to the governor-spindle lo and Z and their lower ends are connected with the slide at and adapted to move vertically.
On the supports 19 the bars p are fastened at the points 19', one of the supports having the bars 19 at the front and the other at the back. To said supports the levers n are pivoted, that are provided on their free ends with guide-forks 01 for the belt 2. The 1evers n are connected by the links m with the slide m, which is connected with the governor-weight 1, so that when the governorweight moves up or down the said levers n will be moved correspondingly and the endless belt o' is raised or lowered. To prevent the slide m from turning, it is provided with an arm m that is mounted to slide up and down in a slot 10 in the cross-piece 10*, connecting the supports 1), as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 5, and 6.

In case the speed of rotation of the shaft a increases, the governor-balls spread and the driving-belt t' is raised, so that the drum It makes a less number of rotations than the drum g. Consequently the bevel cog-wheelt will make less revolutions than the Wheel 2 and the head 11 will be turned axially a distance proportionately to the difference in speed between the wheels 2 and t and will turn the shaft 10, connected with the valves, &c., of the motor, correspondingly. The di ameter of the wheels a u thus acts as a simple lever, having its fulcrum on the rim of the Wheel 6, its point of action on the rim of the wheel z, and the point at which the power is applied at the pivot '12, so that the number of rotations of the head ois equal to half the diiference in rotations between the wheels 5 and t. When the governor-balls descend, the speed of the wheel t will be greater than that of the Wheel z and the head '0 and pivot 22' and the shaft to will be turned in an inverse direction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with two opposite tapering drums and endless belt passing around the same, of a governor, pivoted levers having forks for guiding the endless belt, means for operating said levers from the governor, a driving-shaft for rotating one of the drums, a driver-shaft in line with said driving-shaft, a sleeve surrounding the driven shaft, means for rotating said sleeve from the other drum, bevel cog-wheels on the driving-shaft and on the driven shaft, a sleeve surrounding the driven shaft, means for rotating said sleeve from the other drum, bevel cog-wheels on the driven shaft, a head keyed on the driven shaft and having opposite pivots, and bevel cog-wheels mounted on said head and engaging the bevel cog-wheels on the driving and driven shafts, substantially as set forth.
