UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT CAMPBELL, OF LOSTOOK, NEAR NORTIIVVIOH, ENGLAND.
FUMIGATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 487,173, dated November 29, 1892. Application filed March 22, 1892. Serial No. 4:25.980. (No model.) Patented in England April 3, 1890, ITO- 5.307.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT CAMPBELL, gardener, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Lostock, near Northwich, in the county of Chester, England, have invented a new and Improved Eu migator for Destroying Insects in Plants and for other Analogous Purposes, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 5,307, dated April 3, 1890,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a simple and reliable fumigator for eifectually destroying insects in plants and for other analogous purposes.
In the accompanying drawings I illustrate in Figure 1 a side View, partly in section, and in Fig. 2 a plan view, of my improved fumigator.
Now this invention consists in the employment of a rectangular-shaped sheet of thick paper or thin pasteboard coated With or immersed in any Well-known insect-poison solution-for instance, that consisting of nicotine, lime, and essential or volatile oils-and upon one face of which is affixed (by means of gum, flour paste, or other suitable adhesive substance) asimilarly-shaped piece ofthick paper, but which is corrugated, crimped, or fluted transversely along its entire length. These two papers (indicated by letters a and b in the accompanying drawings) are then rolled together in a spiral or volute form, as illustrated more clearly in Fig. 2, forming a series of channels or passages, and to retain them in the coiled position they are surrounded by an envelope or belt of paper a, and so constitute my improved fumigator. The fulnigator is now ready for use, and by providing it at one end with wire hook d the same can he suspended vertically from, say, the branch of the plant to be treated or from any part of a horticultural building. Thelower end is then ignited; but the non-inflammable nature of the poisonous element used prevents a flame and allows the paper to smolder and give off its poisonous fumes. These fumes, ascending, pass up the channels or passages Within the fumigator formed by the corrugated paper and promote combustion and escape at the top thereof onto the plant or into the atmosphere.
To prevent any chance of the outer wrapper or belt a taking fire, I coat the same with asbestus paint or other non-inflammable material.
What I claim, and desire to secure by.Letters Patent, is
A fumigator consisting of a combustible sheet coated or impregnated with a poisonous substance and a corrugated or crimped sheet which is convoluted with the coated or impregnated sheet to form a passage for the poisonous fumes and promote combustion Whenthe fum'l ator is ignited, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto atfixed my signature to the foregoingspecification.
ROBERT CAMPBELL.
