TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,066, dated November 29, 1892.
Application filed April 3, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER DAVIDSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to that class of lever type-writing machines in which a center guide or directrix is employed,
.and by which a more perfect alignment of the printing may be obtained. In machines of this description it is not necessary to pivot the radiating type levers or carriers with the precision and nicety required in machines devoid of a center guide, for'any slight inaccuracies in pivoting or occurring in time by reason of wear of the carrier journals or bearings are corrected by the center guide as the type pass therethrough on their way to effect an impression upon the paper of the platen.
As machines containing a center guide have heretofore been constructed the type levers or carriers have been made of a single piece, with the type mounted rigidly at one end thereof, and as thus constructed the corrections in adjustment or alignment of the typelevers have been effected in the center guide by a movement of the type levers or carriers bodily, which in a measure destroys the momenta of the carriers, and hence the force of impression, besides increasing the resistance at the finger-keys and making the touch more difficult and laborious.
My invention has for its main object to overcome these objections in previously-made machines; and to this end it consists, primarily, in certain features of construction and combinations of devices, all of which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a type-writing machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail View of the center guide, a type-holder, type-carrier, connecting-rod, andhanger or support. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the inner end of the typelever. I shall first refer to Figs. 1 to 4".
A represents the paper-carriage, which may be of any approved construction; B, the top plate or type-ring of the machine, which is supported by posts 0, secured to the bedplate D, beneath which the key-levers E are pivoted in substantially the well-known way.
F represents the finger-keys attached to the forward ends of the key-levers E. Around the top plate are secured hangers G, in the bifurcated inner ends of each of which is pivoted the type-carrier arm or lever 2, to the shorter portion of which, preferably, is attached the upper end of a connecting-rod 3, whose lower end is connected'to the key-lever E. The type end of each type-carrier is bent downwardly or provided with an extension 4 and is formed with around hole 5 and an oblong hole or slot 6.
