SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 487,029, dated November 29, 1892. Application filed June 22. 1892. Serial No.437,616. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that we, WILLIAM L. GRAY and JOSEPH RIVERS, citizens of the United States, residing at Evanston, in the county of Uinta and State of Wyoming, have invented a new and useful Pop Safety-Valve, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pop safety-valves; and it has for its object to provide an improved safety and exhaust valve adapted for use upon locomotives and stationary boilers, steam-chests, and any particular part of an engine designed to carry a given amount of steam-pressure. Y
The main and primary object of the invention is to provide an improved safety and exhaust valve of this character which Will relieve the pressure of steam and accurately and evenly reduce the same, so that there will not only be no undue loss of steam, but the operation of the valve will be attended with much less noise than those ordinarily in use.
With these and many other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention isbetter understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a safety and exhaust valve constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 isa vertical longitudinal sectional view Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the regulating ring, cap, or slide.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents the valve body or casing, adapted to be secured to the boiler or valve-chest which is to be relieved of undue pressure therein, and said valve casing or body is provided with an eXteriorly-threaded outer 4edge a and an interiorly-beveled valve-seat portion a and an adjacent fiat or horizontal valveseat a2, leading from said beveled portion at the outer end of the body. The Iiat or horizontal portion of the valve-seat is inclosed Within the extreme outer eXteriorly-threaded portion 0f the valve-casing, and intermediate of the said threaded portion and the lower valveseat is formed an annular steam-groove B, the outer Wall of which is raised above the plane of the valve-seat, so that the steam escaping from beneath the valve-disk C will strike the said outer wall and be directed straight up without spitting laterally from under the valve and filling the cab or engine-room with the escaping steam. The valve-disk C is provided wit-h a Winged stem D, smallerthan the diameter of the same'and working snugly within the valve casing or body to evenly guide the valve in its movement. The said valve-disk C is further provided With an annular groove E in its under face, which lies directly over the flat portion ofthe Valveseat, and'on the inside of which is formed the beveled contact-face E', which is designed to rest in the beveled portion of the valve-seat, while the outer edge of the groove ts flat upon the flat portion of the valve-seat, so as to form adouble seat for the valve. The intermediate groove naturally forms a steam-cushion for the valve, so that when the pressure of steam is reduced the valve settles gradually and quietly upon its seat Without the usual attendant pop and jar. The said valvedisk C is further provided with an alternate series of circular openings F, extending therethrough and opening into the annular groove E near its outer edge.
Ad justably mounted upon the valve-disk is the regulating ring-cap G, provided with an alternate series of perforations H, which are designed to register with the openings F in the valve-disk, and are further provided with the circular slots l, through which pass the adj usting-screws J, providing means for the circular adjustment of said rings, so as to open or close the openings or as many of such openings as desired, according to the needs of the engine with which the valve is used in connection. It will be readily seen that when the openings in the valve-disks are closed by the ring-slide all of the steam must escape from under the valve-disk,and the same would therefore remain open longer and cause more pressure of steam to be lost in the boiler or chest. By moving the ring-slide so as to uncover the said openings it will be-readily seen thata great deal of the steam-pressure is taken off of the valve by the steam escaping directly therethrough, and thus allows the valve to close much more quickly to keep a more even pressure in the boiler. A bridge or yoke K is provided with an interiorlythreaded ring K', engaging the exterior edge or end of the IOO valve bodyor easing,.and is provided Withan upper threaded `perforation Vkystanlding directly over the center of the valve-disk inelosed Within the same, and is designed to receive the adjusting-screw L. the lower end of which rests upon the springsupport O, having a pointed bearing-pin P bearing directly in the center lof the valvedisk to place the springpressure evenly thereon. The tension of the spring may be adjusted so 'that the valvewill open zunder any given pressure of steam.
The many advantages of the herein-described valve will readily suggest themselves to steam-engineers.
