EGG-BEATER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,024, dated November 29, 1892.

Be it known that I, URIAH D. SELTZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Combined Potato and Egg Beater, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a combined potatomasher and egg-beater, and has for its obj ect to provide such a device as shall be simple in operation and cheap to manufacture, and

the plunger to its normal position after hav-` ing been forced down against the action of said spring.

The cylinder A, open at both ends, is made, preferably, from perforated sheet metal and has the stiifening band or bead c around the top and another band or bead b around the bottom, the first-mentioned band or bead a forming a projecting Iiange around said cylinder and provided with notches a', for a purpose to be presently described.

The cylinder A is adapted to be seated in the annular recess d in the ring B and is held in place by the hook-shaped lugs c, which engage the above-mentioned bead a.- To fasten thecylinder in place, it is only necessary to slip the lugs through the notches a and then turn the cylinder to the right or to the left, as the case may be.

Formed integral with the ring B is the crosshead F, through a bearing d in the center of which slides the reciprocating plunger-rod D, carrying the plunger C on its lower' end.

Its upper end forms the operating-handle E.

The spring G for retaining the plunger normally in position may be either a bow-spring, as shown in the drawings, or it may be a spiral spring coiled around the plunger-rod.y In either case one end is attached to a lug e smaller perforations than trated in Figs. l and 2. This cylinder is used might wish to close up on the cross-head F and the other to a corresponding lug g on the handle E.

The plunger C has a diameter just slightly smaller than t-he inside diameter of the cylinder to permit of the reciprocation of the plunger within said cylinder. By making the perforations in the different cylinders of a varying size I accommodate my device to various uses.

The operation is as follows: When it is desired to mash potatoes, they are placed in a bowl and my device is placed down on them, so that some of the potatoes willbe inclosed by the cylinder. Then the handle is pushed down, the plunger descends within the cylinder, and forces the inclosed potatoes out through the perforationsof said cylinder.l

My device is then moved to another part ot' the bowl and the operation repeated until the potatoes are sufficiently desiccated to suit.

The advantages and utility of my device are apparent. It has a wide range of usefulness, for it may be used as well for an eggbeater, fruit-press, circ., as for a potato-masher. Combined with the efficient manner in which these operations are performed make it a very desirable obj ect for kitchen use. Its simplicity, too, is a feature. Its parts, being few and easy to manufacture, will enable me to make it at a cost within the reach of every one.

In Fig. 3 I have shown a cylinder having the cylinder illuswhen employing the device as au egg-beater, mixing cottage-cheese, whipping cream, &c.

It is apparent that the scope of my invention would include any immaterial changes in my construction which I might wish to make-ws, for instance, for some purposes I one end of the cylinder A, 49cc.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. An implement ofthe class described,

lcomprising the ring B, the yoke F, formed integral therewith, the open-ended cylinder A, detachably secured to said ring, the springactuated plunger C, adapted to reciprocate within said cylinder, the handle E, and lugs g IOO v integral e, cast, respectively, upon the yoke F and handle E for retaining the spring G in position, substantially as described.

An implement of the class described, comprising the ring B, having lugs c thereon, the cylinder A, detachably secured t0 said ring and provided with the iiange or bead a, with notches a therein, the yoke F, formed C, adapted to reciprocate Within said plunger the plunger-rod D, attached to said cylinder, plunger, device, substantially as described.

3. An implement of the class described, comprising the ring B, the cylinder detachyably secured thereto, the cross-head or yoke with said ring B,the spring-actuated t and the handle E for operating said F, formed integral with said ring, the plunger C, adapted to reciprocate Within said cylinder, the plunger-rod D,operatinghandle E, and spring Gr, formed of a single piece of Wire looped in the middle, as shown, and having Athe straight arms attached the one to the handle E, the other to the cross-head or yoke F, substantially as described.
