WITNESSES A TTOHNE Y S.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC HENRY MCFARREN WRIGHT, OF ASPEN, COLORADO.
WHIFFLETREE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,947, dated November 29, 1892.
Application filed March 9, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY MCFARREN WRIGHT, of Aspen, in the county of Pitkin and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Singletrees and Supports Therefor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of'the invention is to provide a new and improved singletree and support therefor which is simple and durable in construction, readily applied, and arranged to prevent detachment of the tree in case the bolt breaks.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement as applied with parts in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view of the middle part of the tree.
The singletree A is formed at its middle, on the under side, with a recess, in which is secured a plate B, formed in its front with a transversely-extending recess 0, adapted to be engaged by the head D of a pin E, projecting from the top of a plate F, attached to the cross-bar G of the shafts. The rear end of the recess 0 is closed, as plainly shown in Fig. 3, so that when pressure is applied in a forward direction on the singletree the said pin and its head D rest against the back of the plate, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 3. The under side of the plate B is preferably formed with a segmental projection B', (see Fig. 5,) resting on the top surface of the plate F, so as to permit the convenient turning of the singletree A.
In order to hold the singletree in position on the pin E, which latter forms the fulcrum, a bolt H is provided, which extends through Serial No. 424,310- (No model.)
I the said link passing around the cross-bar G up at thefront and rear of the singletree A to unite at the top, the free ends of the sections I and I being provided with tongue and groove I and 1 respectively, fitting one into the other on the top of the singletree A, as plainly shown in Fig. 3.
Near the outer ends of the singletree A. are arranged straps J, forming loops engaging the ends of the singletree, the said straps being secured to the under side of the cross-bar G, so that in case the pivot for the singletree A breaks the singletree is still supported on the straps J to preventa complete detachment of the singletree and consequent dropping of it onto the horses hind legs, as is frequently the case in singletrees as now constructed. Each of the straps J after being passed around the respective end of the singletree A extends rearwardly down the rear edgeof the crossbar G to be fastened at the ends to the under side by a suitable pin or bolt, as plainly shown in Fig. 4.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The herein-described whiffletree-fastening, consisting in the plate B, having an undercut recess 0 in its lower side, the plate F, having a centrally-apertured pin E on its upper side entering said. recess and having a head entering the undercut part thereof, the link I, formed in two sections I I pivoted together at one end, as shown at 1 and overlapped at their opposite apertured ends, as shown at I I and the bolt H, extending through said apertured ends, pin E, and through an aperture in thehinged end of the link member I substantially as set forth.
HENRY MCFARREN WRIGHT.
