Description
(No Model.) I. SCOTT.
GRAVE BOX OUVER.
10.486,943. Patented Nov. '29, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC SCOTT, OF CHRISMAN, ILLINOIS.
GRAVE-BOX COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,943, dated November 29, 1892. Application filed May 27, 1892. Serial No. 434,549. (No model.)
To a/,ZZ whom it 12m/y concern,.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC SCOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chrisman, in the county of Edgar and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Grave-BoX Cover, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in grave-box covers; and it consists of the construction and arrangement of parts thereof, together with the formation of the' bed or brickwork of the grave, as will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of this invention is to provide an adjustable cover for the top portion of rough boxes to prevent Water from flowing upon the same, the said cover being of such construction as to deflect the Water to one side away from the rough box and thereby obviate decay of the said box` In the drawings, Figure I is a sectional perspective View showing the improved cover applied in connection with the brickwork of the bottom of the grave. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the improved cover detached.
Similar numerals are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates the side and end walls of brickwork usually constructed at the bottom portion of a grave; but in this special instance one course of brick is left projecting above the upper level of the wall at the inner portion thereof, as at 2, and upon which the improved device is adapted to be applied.
The invention primarily embodies two semicircular metallic plates 3 and 4, telescopically fitted to each other, and having right-angular side flanges 5 which are adapted t0 rest upon the interior elevated courseof brick, as at 2. The said cover is closed at the opposite ends, as at 4X, and is adapted to be supplied with suitable rings or eyes 6 for lifting or properly positioning the said cover. It will be understood that the rough box will be placed inside of the opening bordered by the elevated course of brick hereinbefore referred to, and when the iianges 5 are resting ou said elevated course of brick entrance of water to the rough box will be obviated and will be shed or deflected to the top portion of the brick vwall and flow off therefrom. It will be seen that the interior course of brick in elevated position, as set forth, together with the walls proximately so, in order to provide a watershed, as will be readily understood.
The device will be made in various sizes and widths; but for ordinary purposes one cover may be adjusted to various lengths of the grave, as will be readily understood, and thereby avoid the necessity of manufacturing a great number of sizes. In some instances, however, the provision of various widths of cover will be necessary.
It will be understood that the cover maybe made of any suitable metal; but galvanized iron or analogous material will be preferable by reason of the fact that it does not become so readily corroded by the action of water.
The device is exceedingly durable and will last a great length of time, and aside from the advantage set forth it will be very beneficial -in supporting the earth and prevent caving in of the grave.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
l. A grave-box cover consisting of two semicircular plates telescopically overlapping each other and having horizontally-positioned side flanges at right angles thereto and verticallydisposed closed outer ends and eyes or rings on the top adjacent to the outer closed `ends of each of the plates for lifting the device entire, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a grave-Wall having an inner raised course of brick or stone, of a cover constructed of semicircular plates telescopically fitted to each other and having flanges adapted to rest on said raised course of brick, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Ihave hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
ISAAC SCOTT.
