CAR-DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,562, dated November 22, 1892.

.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS EUBANK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Oar-Door, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in car-doors, the objects in view being to provide a door that is readily slidable in its ways and when closed and locked may be made tight, so as to close the door-opening in an effectual manner against sleet, rain, sparks, snow, 850.
With these general objects in view the in-- vention consists in certain features of construction hereinafterspecified, and particularly pointed out in the. claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a-front elevation of a car-door constructed in accordance with myinvention, the same being shown as locked. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same open. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail in perspective of the gravity latch and its supporting-stud. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail in section of the locking-stud, gravity-latch, and locking-lever. Fig. 5 is afront elevation of the lock and lever for the door.

1 designates the side of the car,having the usual door-opening and at opposite sides and beyond the edges of the same in thisinstance provided with vertical strips 2, the front face of one of which declines from opposite sides of a point above the center of said strip. Above the door-opening there is secured to the wall of the car a rail 3, and below the opening keepers 4 are secured, the same combining with said rail for the support of the door to be hereinafter described. The door is formed in sections consisting of the upper section 5 and the lower section 6, the divisionline occurring in line with the point at which theface of one of the strips 2 declines. A metal strip 7 is secured to the lower edge of the upper door-section 5 and depends over the crevice between the two sections, thus covering the same effectually. At their inner edges the sections are hinged together by ordinary hinges 8, which are let into the inner faces of said sections. A hand-hold 9 extends from the lower section and suitable hangers 10 from the upper edge of the upper seotion,said hangers taking over and riding upon the rail 3.
11 designates a lever the upper portion of which is rigidly secured to the front face of the upper section 5 and the lower portion of which is adapted to lie upon the lower door-, section 6 when the sections are in alignment and terminates at its lower end or extremity in a handle or loop 12. Above the handle or loop a vertically-disposed elliptical eye or opening 13 is formed in the lever, the lower end of which is provided with a transverse shoulder 14. A stud 15 extends from the face of the lower door-section 6 in line with the eye 13 of the lever 11. The stud is provided at its outer end with a transverse pin 16, which serves to prevent the eye of the lever from passing over the stud, though inasmuch as the stud is longer than the lever is wide it will be seen that the lever will have a limited play between the transverse pin and the face of the door-section 6, and thus the two sections will be permitted to move upon their hingesout of vertical alignment, whereby the length of the door as a whole is reduced. The stud is further provided in rear of the stop-pin with a. vertical opening l7,and pivoted in the opening is a gravity-latch l8, T-shaped in cross-section and moving on a pivot-pin 19, passing through the latch and stud. The latch is greater in length than the stud is in width, so that when lowered to its fullest extent into the opening of the stud its lower extremity, which is beveled, projects into the path of the shoulder 14, formed in the eye of the lever 11. Now by raising the latch, so as to disengage the eye therefrom and permit the lever 11 to swing outwardly, the sections moving on their hinges are thrown out of alignment and the length of the door asa whole slightly reduced, whereby it is permitted to ride loosely in the ways provided for it. The described movement of the door also permits the same to be slid over that strip 2 that is beveled and located at the rear side of the door and to one side of the door-opening, whereby the entrance to the car is uncovered. The door may also he slid to a closed position over the opening, and by pressing the lever inwardly the two sections 5 and 6 are brought into alignment, the door lengthened, and thus fitted tightly over the opening and between the vertical cleats 2.
When the sectionsare pushed inwardly, the eye of the lever at its shoulder portion 14 rides against the under side of the latch, forcing the latterupwardly,andaftersaid shoulder passes in rear of the latch and the latter is liberated it falls, thus locking the lever against accidental displacement.
If desired, a perforation 20 may be formed in the lower edge of the latch, and through the same any ordinary sealing-wire may be passed; or, as herein shown, the sealing-hook 21 may be passed through the perforation,
whereby the latch is prevented from rising,
and the wire or seal fastened in perforations 22, formed in the hook, the hook being normally suspended from a chain-23, secured to the door.
From the foregoing description, inconnection with the accompanying drawings, it:will be seen that I have provided-a cheap,simple, and convenient means for operating and securing the doors of cars, whereby the same may be fitted tightly over the openings and exclude all rain, sleet, &c.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination, witl1 the car having the door-opening supports for the door and the opposite vertical strips, one of which declines at its front face from an intermediate point, of the door adapted to fit between the strips and consisting of upper andlowersections hinged together in line with the point at which the face of the strip declines, the stud extending from the face of the lower section and provided with stops at its outer end, a latch loosely pivoted in the stud, and a lever rigidly secured to the upper section and terminating at its lower end in an eye fitting over the stud, engaged by the latch and adapted for movement between the face of the door and the stops at the outer end of the stud, substantially as specified. 4
2. The combination, with the car-wall having the opening, the door-supports adjacent thereto, and the vertical strips located near the opposite edges of the opening. the rear one of which has its front face declined from an intermediate point, of the upper and lower door-sections hinged at their inner edges, the strip secured to the lower edge of the upper section and overlapping the intermediate space between the sectionsthe stud extending from the lower section, stop-pins located at the outer end of the same, a vertically-movable gravity-latch located in the stud, and a lever rigidly secured tothe upper section and provided near its lower end with an eye adapted totake over the stud and in thelower end of the eye with a shoulder for engaging the'latch, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the car having the opening, the opposite strips, the sectional door adapted to fit between the strips, and the lever-secured tothe upper section and dependinglin front of the lower section and provided at its lower end with .an eye, of a recessed studextending fromthe lower section ofthe door andhaving a transverse pin within its recess and alatch, vertically slotted, mounted in the recess and loosely receiving the pin and arranged in the path'of the eye of the lever and provided below the stud with a perforation .for receiving the seal, substantially as specified.
