Description

(No Model.)
H. H. PALMBR, Dec'd.
S. D. PALMER, Admnistraton GRUPPER.
No. 486,587. Patented-Nov. 22, 1892.
UNITED STATEs PATENT FFICE.
I-IENRY H. PALMER, OF ROOKFORD, ILLINOIS; SAMUEL D. PALMER ADMIN- ISTRATOR OF SAID HENRY H. PALMER, DECEASED.
CRUPPER.
SPECIFICATION formjng part of Letters Patent No. 486,537, datecl November 22, 1892.
Application filed May 14, 1888. Serial No. 273,838. (No model.)
T0 LZZ wwm it may concern- Be it known that I, HENRY H. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, county of Winnebago, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cruppers, of which the following is a specification.
It is a known fact that a horse that hugs his tail is not as handsome as one that carries his tail free and in an easy manner.
The object of this invention is to so construct a crupper that it in use will cause the tail to be carried free, as shown in the'drawings.
This invention consists in a crupper of the usual Outline form, in which a stiffening rib or rod of spring material is incased in its manufacture for'affording a support for the tail.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a representation of my improved crupper in position on a horse, showing the improvement in the manner of supporting the tail. Fig. 2 is a lengthwise section of my crupper, showing the internal spring-core in position.
My improved crupper in the main is of the usual form; and it consists, essentially, of an outside casing of leather with a suitable filling of leather, hair, or other substance adapted to the purpose.
In the manufacture of my improved crupper a spring rib or rod of suitable dimensions is covered With a filling, after which it is inclosed in a suitable casing and the crupper bent to the required form, or the spring-core may be bent in the proper shape before covering and the outer casing made to conform to'it, as shall be most convenient to the maker.
In use my crupper is applied the same as an ordinary crnpper, resting on the body of the horse about midway of its length, and by 40 means of its stiffness acts as a support for the tail, holding it somewhat elevated and giving a graceful carriage to the animal.
The ordinary constructcd crupper is very fiexible, and is only designed for holding the harness in position, while the crupper herein described fills not only this oifice, but in its spring action serves to elevate the tail of the horse when the muscles of the tail are relaxed.
I claim as my invention- 1. The herein-described crupper, consisting of the outer casing made of leather, a metallic core of spring material inclosed within and conforming to the shape of said casing, the ends of the metallic core extending forward along that portion of the crnpper which rests on the back of the horse, for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein-described crupper, consisting of the outer casing made of leather, a metallic core of spring material Vinclosed within the casing, its ends extending forwardly along" that portion of the crupper which rests on the horse*s back, and a packing inserted between the casing and the metallic core, substantially as set forth.
HENRY H. PALMER. Witnesses:
