TYPE-WRlTlNG-MACHINE CARD-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,036, dated November 8, 1892.
Application filed March 5, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. GODFREY, of Milford, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Type-Writing-Machine Card-Holders, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification,likeletters and figures on the drawings representing like parts.
Type-writing machines having banks of keyssuch as the Hammond, Remington, &c.-are now largely used in business places for a great variety of Work, chiefly, however, on thin paper, which is readily adaptable to the usual feed-rollers of the machine; but all machines referred to are not well adapted to printing on stiff paper.
The object of my invention is to adapt typewriting machines having feed-rolls and banks of keys for the reception of stifi cards now largely used in libraries and business-houses for indexing work, whereby it will not be necessary to bend the cards at all.
In accordance with my invention I have combined with the feed-rolls a card-holder to positively engage the bottom edge of and sustain the card without bending in proper position with relation to the type-writing line of the machine. I shall preferably make the card-holder adjustable with relation to the type-writing line, so as to adapt the holder to cards of different depth.

The frame or yoke partAand the feed-rolls B (l, the type-carrier D, and the throat E are common to the Hammond machine, and in practice, in connection with these parts, will be employed a type-carrier and banks of keys, all as common to said machine, and such parts, being well known, need not be herein shown or further described, and it will also be understood that my invention to be described with slight modifications maybe made applicable to other forms of type-writing machines having banks of keys and rolls, so the use of Serial No. 423,868. (No model.)

My cardholder F in the form in which my invention is herein embodied is made as a trough, the latter positively engaging the bottom edge of and supporting the card G between the feed-rolls, the card, as shown, entering and resting on the trough-like holder without being bent. The ends of the holder have ears f, which have co-operating with them screw-threaded rods g, on which are suitable nuts 2, which constitute holder-adjusting devices, whereby the holder may be adjusted vertically with relation to the type-writing line, which is supposed to bein about the line 0:, Fig.1. The adjustment of the holder on the rods enables a line to be printed on cards at a uniform distance from their lower or upper edges.
The upper ends of the screw-rods have, as shown, holes 3 to receive suitable studs or pivot-screws 4, the nuts 2 being vertically adjustable on said rods 9.
Having described my invention, What I claim as novel, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a type-Writer and its feed-rolls, of, a card-holder bent to positively engage the bottom edge of and sustain without bending a card between the feedrolls and thereby positively hold the same in place to be printed upon, substantially as described.
2. The feed-rolls of the type-writer and the card-holder to positively engage the bottom edge of and present to the type-printing line a stifi unbent card, combined with adjusting devices to adjust the card-holder with relation to the type-writing line toward or from it, substantially as described.
